THE POLITICAL MAN

CHAPTER 1 POLITICAL SOCIOLOGY

ONE OF THE MAIN CONCERNS OF POLITICAL SOCIOLOGY CONSISTS IN AN ANALYSIS OF THE SOCIAL CONDITIONS THAT CONFIGURE DEMOCRACY

According to Lipset, democracy needs both conflict and consensus. According to the author, the idea that conflict is necessarily a disintegrator of order is false. Thus, the unions have strengthened the order, instead of proposing revolutionary changes, which was Marx's idea.

CONSENSUS ARISE AS A RESULT OF CONFLICT AND REQUIRES THE CONTINUITY OF THE CONFLICT TO BE MAINTAINED

    THE INTELLECTUAL BACKGROUND

The Industrial Revolution (18th and 19th centuries) gave birth to POLITICAL SOCIOLOGY. The disintegration of traditional society showed, for the first time, the DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STATE AND SOCIETY, posing the following PROBLEM: how can a society face a continuous conflict between its members and groups, and yet maintain social cohesion and the legitimacy of the state?

Intellectuals proposed choosing: privilege the power of the State, like Bodin, Hegel and others, or that of society against the State, like Saint Simon, Proudhon and Marx.

On the other hand, Hobbes, Locke and Rousseau spoke about the need for consensus, to replace the religious power of the Middle Ages and overcome the division between society and the State.

The mistake of opting for State or for society consisted in treating them as two independent organisms. Political sociologists now argue that the state is only one of many political institutions, and that these are only one of many social institutions.

THE RELATIONS BETWEEN INSTITUTIONS ARE THE SUBJECT OF GENERAL SOCIOLOGY, AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN POLITICAL INSTITUTIONS AND OTHERS ARE THE FIELD OF POLITICAL SOCIOLOGY

Class conflict and consensus: Marx and Tocqueville

After the French Revolution (1789), the problems of CONFLICT VERSUS CONSENSUS emerged. The revolutionaries encouraged the former and the conservatives the latter.

FOR MARX, YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE BETWEEN CONFLICT AND CONSENSUS, SINCE THEY ARE INCOMPATIBLE

CONSENSUS AND HARMONY will only be possible in a communist society, where there is no democracy or any other political form, but rather anarchy (this is an interpretation of Lipset: Marx was not an anarchist), the non-state. This is because, when the division of labor (manual and intellectual) disappears, the main source of social conflict disappears. Communism would be the solution to the antagonism between
