NOTES ABOUT MACHIAVELLI, POLITICS AND THE MODERN STATE

    INTRODUCTION TO GRAMSCI

We recommend reading this section to those who are unaware of the author's work. Gramsci is an Italian thinker from the beginning of the century who carried out an important renewal of Marxist theory. In this sense, he contributed a series of very innovative conceptualizations, particularly on the subject of revolutionary strategy, where he clearly differentiated between the backward East and the developed West, reaching relevant conclusions.

A first theoretical distinction refers to the relationship between civil society and political society. Reworking Marx's analysis, for whom civil society was located in the economic structure, the author places civil society in the superstructure, since it is in the ideological field where one becomes aware of what happens in the economic structure. From there it follows that, when the ideology is delayed with respect to the structure (place where the relations of production are) that ideology is only an appearance, since it has no relation to praxis: the ideology, in this case, is conservative, because in the structure the conditions for the revolution are already given. The central task then consists in raising awareness among the masses in order to change the structure, we must eliminate the false consciousness that the bourgeoisie arms by creating a new hegemony opposed to its own.

The ruling class relies on the State as a set of theoretical and practical activities that serve to guarantee the dominance of capital over labor. This State would be political society, as a state apparatus proper, constituting the moment of coercion, of domination naked, through the bureaucracy, the laws and the armed forces. But in addition, and this is what is most novel in the Gramscian analysis, we find civil society, as the set of institutions that are dedicated to socialization (church, media of communication, school, etc.), and it is here where the intellectual and moral direction" with which the bourgeoisie strengthens its hegemony appears.

Thus, the State would have two moments: one of force (political society) and another of consensus (civil society). If in the East the revolutionary action is focused on taking over the state apparatus, due to the little complex social structure, in the West the strategy is first of all to fight civil society against the ruling class and only later take over civil society. politics. The structure gives the proletariat the historical possibility, so the discourse must be adapted to that reality. When the historical block is not harmonious (that is, when structure and superstructure are not in harmony) awareness is the central task."

In this sense, the political party, the modern prince" appears very important. It must seek a
