Summary of the Gift of Failure by Dan Bongino - Willie M. Joseph

    Introduction

The author shares his experiences in Times Square, New York City, where he spent most of his childhood. He recalls his early failure as a police cadet, where he was lost and unfamiliar with the subways and transit system. This experience led him to work in the Midtown South Precinct, where he was sent to work. Despite the failure, he eventually found a job in the Pattern Identification Module, one of the New York Police Department's earliest efforts to profile criminals. This experience prepared him for his future career as a Secret Service agent.

Now, he is back in Times Square with his wife and daughter, watching the ball drop and ringing the Nasdaq bell to launch Rumble. The author reflects on the vicissitudes in life and the Secret Service protection models, questioning why he is still in Times Square and how he is able to create a multi-billion-dollar company despite not hacking it in the same spot as a cadet.

The author recounts his experience in Times Square, where he took his company public and felt like he had made it. Despite receiving criticism for his failure, he and his wife discuss the idea of writing a book about how failure can be a gift and a springboard. They discuss how failure can be seen as an opportunity to learn and grow, and how if one views failure as an obstacle, they can find new opportunities.

The author reflects on his own successes and failures, recognizing that almost every one was born out of a massive failure. He acknowledges that he has no special skills or abilities, but believes that if he can overcome failure, others can do the same. He continues to think of failures as opportunities to learn and grow.

The author's walk to the hotel became a time machine and inspirational reservoir, as Times Square never fails to inspire him. Although he may have failed in his assertion that he wouldn't be writing more books, he believes that the experience of Times Square has inspired him to continue writing.

    1

The author learned the lesson of failure early in life, which is that it is not about how you look at things but what you do with the failure. Growing up in Queens, the author was a baseball fan and had dreams of becoming a ball player. His cousin, Steve, was an idol to him due to his amazing athleticism. One day, Steve brought the author to one of his first Little League games, and he asked his coach, Jim, to let him pitch. Jim assured the author that he could pitch, but the author realized that it was lonely out there, with people in the stands, their team, and the opposition watching.

The author's plan was to show Steve that he could pitch well, but the situation was a horror show. They batted around before they even got an out, and the author was crushed by Steve's expression in the stands. The author felt guilty for letting their hero down, their team, and themselves down. They gambled by asking to pitch that day, and they failed big.

The author's experience with failure has shaped their perspective on life and the importance of doing what matters. They now understand that failure can be a gift and that it is all about how you approach things.

After a game, the author was embarrassed and decided to not be a scrub or a pitcher. They felt
