HISTORICAL –CULTURAL PSYCHOLOGY: LEV VYGOTSKI

Presentation. Historical-cultural theory of cognitive development.

A genetic psychology: Vygotsky's cultural-historical psychology

Lev Vygotski (1896-1934), created a psychological theory in which the human being is the subject of cultural processes, following the method of Marx and where his interlocutor will be Piaget, whom he criticizes. His work dates from the 1980s in Western psychology. He lived in a relevant cultural and geographical environment, finding himself in a privileged position between tradition and modernity (hard sciences and humanities). He was influenced by the school of the formalists in relation to language as an instrument of diverse human activities. The ideas about the dialogical nature of thought together with Bakhtin, were the bases for the emergence of a new type of logic, which takes the dialogical conscience of the sciences of man. He also developed the notions of semiotic mediation of human activity and that meanings are constituent elements of human consciousness. He studied from linguistics to the psychologies of his time and much more. With his doctorate, thanks to a work on the psychology of art, he established that art creates life instead of reflecting it. From the analysis of the work of art he suggests that we can distinguish between higher or cultural functions and lower or natural mental processes.

From the analysis of the work of art he suggests that we can distinguish between higher or cultural functions and lower or natural mental processes. Vygotsky says about the psyche that it is a distinctive function of man as a material being endowed with a brain, whose laws are modeled by the history of society, which is the historical-social theory of psychic development. He interposes an internal mediating instrument X, in the stimulus-response scheme (behaviorism), which gives significance to the stimulus.

It is a theory developed on the basis of connected concepts: higher psychological processes, mediated action, use of psychological tools. He gives relevance to the historical-genetic approach in psychological studies.

    Central theses

Mediated work is the formative activity of the human being that is a transformer of energy between nature and man, through the use of tools. Cultural activity: culture embodied in activities carried out by the subject with a productive and reproductive character at the same time. Reproductive character: perpetuation manifested by certain instruments, such as language. Productive character: creative aspects that develop the subjects. It is defined in his work that a psychology of cognitive development and learning, as the engine of development and in its interaction with others, that is, in sociocultural situations, can go further in the construction of scientific knowledge, beyond the spontaneous. Consciousness and culture: the first as knowledge of the activity of the mind and awareness of being a social subject and the second has to do with the framework that constitutes the subject. Vygotsky focused for this on the problems of language, thought and cognitive development.
