PSYCHOLOGY 1850-1950

Introduction

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY INTENDED TO BE A POSITIVE KNOWLEDGE AND WAS SUPPORTED ON TWO PHILOSOPHICAL POSTULATES: THAT THE TRUTH OF MAN WAS EXHAUSTED IN HIS NATURAL BEING AND THAT SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE SHOULD PASS THROUGH THE DETERMINATION OF THE QUANTITATIVE, THE CONSTRUCTION OF HYPOTHESES AND THE VERIFICATION EXPERIMENTAL. IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY THESE POSITIONS COME INTO CONTRADICTION AND BY PURSUING THE RIGOR OF THE ACCURACY OF THE NATURAL SCIENCES, THEIR PRINCIPLES WAIVED: OBJECTIVITY IN THE DOMAIN OF THE HUMAN SCIENCES IS NO LONGER ACCEPTABLE, IF MAN HIMSELF DOES NOT BELONG ONLY TO THE ORDER OF NATURE

HE HAD TO LOOK FOR new principles and methods, at first they remained tied to the old method and psychologists tried to analyze behavior using the methods of hard sciences and did not understand that the renewal of methods implied the updating of research topics.

Psychology established new relationships in other fields: education, medicine, groups, pedagogy and psychopathology. It is born, at that point, in which the very practice in which the contradiction is presented, in relation to the reflections of the arrest of development and the lack of adaptation to social rules, the investigation of memory, of consciousness , of the feeling; Then, the psychologies of forgetting, of the unconscious and of affective disturbances appeared. Currently it is based on a reflection on the contradictions of man with himself.

They require two forms of investigation:

    a) from facts to access more general laws.

    b) How CHEMICAL ANALYSIS REDUCES COMPLEX PHENOMENA TO SIMPLE ELEMENTS.

PSYCHOLOGY WILL HAVE THE TASK OF REFINDING IN THE COMPLEX PHENOMENA OF THOUGHT. THE ELEMENTARY SEGMENTS THAT COMPOSE IT, WHICH ARE GOVERNED BY THE LAW OF ASSOCIATION, ONLY TO THE EXTENT THAT IT IS UNIVERSAL.

    1) THE ORGANIC MODEL: the effort is aimed at capturing more closely the reality defined by its organic nature. THE PSYCHE IS CHARACTERIZED BY ITS SPONTANEITY, ITS ADAPTATION CAPACITY AND ITS INTERNAL REGULATION PROCESSES. We have authors like Fechner, Wundt who saw the need to return to the study of nervous activity: the psychic apparatus functions as an organic whole, in which the reactions are original and irreducible to the actions they trigger. This is how research began at the end of the 19th century and psychophysiological studies were carried out where the articulation between the organic part of the brain and the physical apparatus and on the internal regulations of the psyche were sought: pain and pleasure, feelings, tendencies, will.

    2) THE EVOLUTIONIST MODEL: it begins with the
