About this ebook

We have summarized here the essential of this book by the author.

WHAT IS REFLEXIVE SOCIOLOGY?

REFLECTIVE SOCIOLOGY is one of the most important schools of thought in sociology in the second half of the twentieth century (1950-2000). This current emerged in the sixties as a product of an EPOCAL CONTEXT, criticizing the sociology that had existed until then and laying the foundations for a new way of seeing this science. The critique of classical sociology made it possible for a whole universe of theories to emerge that today includes postmodernism, poststructuralism, post-Marxism, deconstructivism, and others.
Reflexive sociology was a current that emerged in the United States and that changed sociological thought as a whole in a short time, something that is usually strange in the country where it was produced, where the academy tends to have conservative positions that do not lend themselves to change fast and abrupt. In Argentina, reflexive sociology had a great influence and merged with some sociological currents produced locally in the sixties and seventies that were very productive in terms of new ideas.

In the seventies in Latin America, the Dependency Theory emerged, which was supported by ECLAC (Economic Commission for Latin America), which explained the way in which the world economy generated, on the one hand, rich economies in the first world and poor economies in the Third World. This theory mixed elements of the theory of modernization, structuralism and Western Marxism, but making a critical reading of each one and reformulating them in a new theoretical framework. This was one of the few theories that was produced in peripheral countries and then adopted by sociologists in central countries (usually the other way around).

This happened because the seventies were years in which a very important sector of the population and intellectuals questioned the established order. It was a time in which a very large number of political, economic and cultural demands were being carried out. The ideological debate was very strong because as a counterpart to this criticism that was made from sectors of the left, the right responded with a defense of the Western and Christian world. The right denounced that the Soviet Union wanted to control other areas of the world, but in reality the protest movements that took place in the West for the most part did not seek a similar regime or that it depended on it. They thought of building ANOTHER TYPE OF SOCIETY and there was a cultural climate of questioning.

In this context, Alvin Gouldner wrote THE CRISIS IN WESTERN SOCIOLOGY, which laid the foundations for REFLECTIVE
