CLASSIC SOCIOLOGY: DURKHEIM & WEBER

The origin of sociology, the founding fathers

The problem of the organization of society and power was always studied, but linked to philosophy or religion. This type of philosophical or religious analysis of society goes from Greece to the Middle Ages, in the West.
In the Renaissance, with MACHIAVELLI (1469-1527), the liberation for political reflection takes place, from theological or philosophical conditioning factors. Thus, POLITICAL SCIENCE (government theory and relationship between government and society) arises, as the FIRST FIELD OF SOCIAL SCIENCE. It seeks to answer how to organize power in the expanding capitalist mode of production. The idea of the voluntary contract arises (Hobbes, Locke, Montesquieu and Rousseau), the SOCIAL CONTRACT, where the social and the political are not something given, fixed, but a process of collective construction. For the contractualists, man precedes society, which he creates and organizes. Thus arises the idea of "society contract", "popular sovereignty", etc.

In the Renaissance, with MACHIAVELLI (1469-1527), the liberation for political reflection takes place, from theological or philosophical conditioning factors. Thus, POLITICAL SCIENCE (government theory and relationship between government and society) arises, as the FIRST FIELD OF SOCIAL SCIENCES. Thus arises the idea of social contract, popular sovereignty, etc.

Then comes the POLITICAL ECONOMY, with the idea of «market», DE SMITH, RICARDO and others, based on ECONOMIC LIBERALISM, theoretical support -along with the contractualist theory- of the rising capitalist bourgeoisie.

First, the problems of exchange and circulation are analyzed, and in the eighteenth century, production: the INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION began. The political and the economic were mixed.

    The origin of sociology

In the 19th century, SOCIOLOGY arose, and was BORN CONSERVATIVE to neutralize the social and political crisis resulting from the Industrial Revolution. It is CLASSICAL SOCIOLOGY. His opponent is MARX's REVOLUTIONARY SOCIOLOGY.

Classical sociology sought to RETURN TO THE ORDER (like the pre-capitalist estate order) lost in the class struggle: it was born linked to the interests of the ruling class.

WITH SOCIOLOGY, FOR THE FIRST TIME CIVIL SOCIETY IS STUDIED IN AN AUTONOMOUS FORM OF THE STATE

SEEKING THE LAWS OF SOCIAL EVOLUTION IN THE IMAGE OF THE NATURAL SCIENCES: the social sciences must be constructed positively. The SOCIETY is seen as equivalent to an ORGANISM, and must be analyzed in its anatomy (parts) and its physiology (functioning). Applicable precepts (remedies) are sought to cure the social organism.

POSITIVISM adopted the METHOD OF BIOLOGY, and is a reaction against the negativism of the rationalist philosophy of the Enlightenment (French Revolution) or ENLIGHTENMENT, which saw a contrast between social reality (which it criticized) and reason: it was a negative philosophy, because it criticized.
