About this audiobook

Seven Brothers. Seven Brides. A revenge seven years in the making.

I never wanted any part of my family’s revenge, but no one asked my opinion when my oldest brother handed out the Brides during Lammas. Now I’m saddled with Monroe, heir to the Amazon faction. She’s as deadly as she is wild, and the opposite of the woman I really want. Shiloh. My best friend.

The night Monroe and I consummate our handfasting is like nothing I’ve experienced before. It’s dark and brutal and intoxicating in a way I’m not prepared for. Which means it can never happen again.

But now, every time I turn around, I find Monroe and Shiloh together. She’s spitefully seducing my best friend, the woman I love, and there’s not a damn thing I can do about it.

I can’t have one without the other, but letting Monroe close means I might lose myself completely.

Katee Robert

New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Katee Robert learned to tell her stories at her grandfather's knee. Her 2015 title, The Marriage Contract, was a RITA finalist, and RT Book Reviews named it "a compulsively readable book." When not writing sexy contemporary or romantic suspense, she spends her time playing imaginary games with her children, driving her husband batty with what-if questions, and planning for the inevitable zombie apocalypse.

    Broderick

In this second novel about Sabine Valley, we focus on Broderick & his bride, Monroe. She is the Amazon heir & he is his brother, Abel's, second-in-command & them feeling anything but hate for each other is far from reality.

Shiloh is a soldier in Abel's army & Broderick's best friend. She also is in love with him & he with her. She soon becomes Monroe's guard when she travels back to Amazon territory.

I enjoyed Monroe, Shiloh, and Broderick, but wanted more depth in their characters, their relationships, and the world in general. I still don't really understand the valley and why it's ruled by these factions, or what they even do for their people that everyone is so concerned with that they're mentioned in almost every conversation with the brides. With Abel's book, I was able to shrug off the lack of knowledge because there was a more detailed focus on the relationships, but Broderick's book lacked that as well, so it all felt too shallow. The lack of development made the choice that Broderick and Shiloh made at the end (view spoiler) didn't really make sense, and I don't know that I believe it can last.

I really wanted to like this book because the potential for great characters to have great relationships is there, but it was all too rushed for my taste. The confrontation at the end in particular was solved waaaaaaaaaay too easily. (view spoiler) It really took the teeth out of the tension and the stakes were pretty much zero even with a near-death experience.

I think this book could have used a higher page count instead of rushing through everything while keeping it under 300pgs. I appreciated the inclusion of Shiloh's trauma, it and she was treated with respect, but the book was so short that it didn't really allow Shiloh any time to have a personality outside of her trauma.

Like the first book, I took a break while reading this one, but unlike the first I was bored. There are some excellent and remarkably sexy lines, which stand out to me, but the rest (including most of the sex) were just kinda meh. I'm still looking forward to the rest of the series, but this one fell just short of my admittedly high expectations.

Content warnings for descriptions of the physical abuse Shiloh suffered at the hands of her parents as a child.
