About this audiobook

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo; now with a bonus conversation with Julia Whelan and Taylor Jenkins Reid, recorded exclusively for this edition.

At the age of twenty-nine, Hannah Martin still has no idea what she wants to do with her life. She has lived in six different cities and held countless meaningless jobs since graduating college. On the heels of leaving yet another city, Hannah moves back to her hometown of Los Angeles and takes up residence in her best friend Gabby’s guestroom. Shortly after getting back to town, Hannah goes out to a bar one night with Gabby and meets up with her high school boyfriend, Ethan.

Just after midnight, Gabby asks Hannah if she’s ready to go. A moment later, Ethan offers to give her a ride later if she wants to stay. Hannah hesitates. What happens if she leaves with Gabby? What happens if she leaves with Ethan?

In concurrent storylines, Hannah lives out the effects of each decision. Quickly, these parallel universes develop into radically different stories with large-scale consequences for Hannah, as well as the people around her. As the two alternate realities run their course, Maybe in Another Life raises questions about fate and true love: Is anything meant to be? How much in our life is determined by chance? And perhaps, most compellingly: Is there such a thing as a soul mate?

Hannah believes there is. And, in both worlds, she believes she’s found him.

What our readers think

Readers find this title to be a mixed bag. Some appreciate the concept of two side-by-side stories and the way the author addresses crises and disappointments. They find the writing well-done and the emotions evoked to be powerful. However, others find the book boring, repetitive, and with a passive main character. They also criticize the rushed ending and the repetitive dialogues about love. Overall, the book is recommended for fans of the author, but some readers may find it lacking compared to her other works.

Love this book! I was inspired to read it because I too loved the movie Sliding Doors.

Taylor has a way of writing that resonates with me and her narrator is always awesome as well! ❤️

The concept was great with the dual stories. I was not a fan of her writing as the character interactions/conversations were not believable. As for the narration: Male versions of the audio were CRINGE and did not take into consideration the age or persona of the characters. At this point, just don't change your voice! Overall, I skipped a lot to get to the end because I felt slightly invested in knowing how it ended.

    **Disappointing Story and Narration**

I liked the author's other books and the narrator's work. However, this title is nothing like their other work.

The story had a promising concept: exploring two parallel lives based on a single decision made differently in a split second. But the plot was predictable and the characters lacked depth. The biggest letdown was the constant repetition throughout the book. Entire chapters were identical except for a few characters' names.

The narration was even a bigger disappointment than the story. I’ve always enjoyed the narrator’s voice and narration styles in other books but the repetitive use of dialogue tags like “he says”, “I say”, “she says” following every other sentence in every chapter was tiresome. Even after skipping ahead, I found this overuse continued throughout the audiobook. Lastly, the “male” voice was very fake and totally destroyed the credibility of those male characters.

While I normally finish audiobooks even if I have some issues, this repetitive storyline and the narration made it impossible for me to continue.

**Overall, I would not recommend this audiobook.**

Don't bother! Repetitive story and bland. The male voice is terrible. All the males sound the same

Schmaltzy but endured the repetitive dialog ( how many ways & times can characters repeat how much they love each other?) to get to the end. The concept of various lives with many potential possibilities for happiness was a good idea, but the author’s vehicle for illustrating this was so amateurish. How can the same author who wrote Daisy Jones, Evelyn Hugo, etc…. written this?? To me this is a YA book, primarily for teen girls. Urg.

This book really touched me. I find myself asking the same question about an accident I was in that threw my life on a different course then one I would have stayed on. I thought of the movie Sliding Doors while reading. Excellent writing, I can’t wait Taylor’s next book!

I want to love this book! I just can’t handle the voices of the characters. They are truly cringe worthy. I can’t make it through the first chapter. I will try the print version of the book instead.

I’m only leaving a review because I appreciate when I’m forewarned about the character portrayal in other audiobook titles and wish I had been spared this one.

The writing is fine. My sole issue is the reader. I’m sure it’s a great book!
