About this audiobook

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author known for her “superb pacing, twisted characters, and captivating prose” (BuzzFeed), Lisa Jewell returns with a scintillating new psychological thriller about a woman who finds herself the subject of her own popular true crime podcast.

Celebrating her forty-fifth birthday at her local pub, popular podcaster Alix Summer crosses paths with an unassuming woman called Josie Fair. Josie, it turns out, is also celebrating her forty-fifth birthday. They are, in fact, birthday twins.

A few days later, Alix and Josie bump into each other again, this time outside Alix’s children’s school. Josie has been listening to Alix’s podcasts and thinks she might be an interesting subject for her series. She is, she tells Alix, on the cusp of great changes in her life.

Josie’s life appears to be strange and complicated, and although Alix finds her unsettling, she can’t quite resist the temptation to keep making the podcast. Slowly she starts to realize that Josie has been hiding some very dark secrets, and before she knows it, Josie has inveigled her way into Alix’s life—and into her home.

But, as quickly as she arrived, Josie disappears. Only then does Alix discover that Josie has left a terrible and terrifying legacy in her wake, and that Alix has become the subject of her own true crime podcast, with her life and her family’s lives under mortal threat.

Who is Josie Fair? And what has she done?

Very intriguing story. I couldn’t stop! Finished it in 2 days. Loved the voice acting. Didn’t love the ending because I’m a happily ever after kind of girl but that’s just my personality. But what else can you expect from a mystery who-done-it book? It was great and highly recommend!

This is an exceptional, very original, and chilling psychological crime thriller. Kudos to Lisa Jewell. I think this is one of her best books. The narration adds a very effective layer of experience to the story.

Meh. With a large number of threads left hanging (ex cocaine in the pocket) I found it sloppy. Also a bleak portrayal of English culture.

Ok, I had high hopes for this book! It also had so much potential and maybe I just don’t have the bandwidth to keep up! lol. I felt like this one was all over the place. Even half way through the book I felt like I had no idea what was happening. I was still racking my brain! I wanted to feel differently about this one :(

It was okay but so hard to keep up with. I think it would be a really good movie tho. I’m still confused on what was the truth.

Good story, good build up and twists. Narration was also good. Took me a minute to warm up to the vacillations between scenes of the book and the podcast style. Recommend!

I mean, where do I begin? I had heard nothing but good things about this book and was so ready to jump in. A podcast about having a birthday twin turned into a true crime podcast from the events that follow. There are so many stories. There are so many lies. Who should you believe?

This was gripping to the end. I'm so glad I listened to the audio, I feel the voices were perfect. Not sure just reading the book, I would have received the fullness of it.

The audio version of this book is one of the best I've heard! It brought to life the characters and scenes, distinguishing clearly between excerpts from the podcast, police interviews, and regular narration.

The writing is riveting, and the descriptions she gives are beautiful. An example is when Lisa Jewell describes something as "the color of overripe raspberries." It's so vivid. Anyway, I like thrillers and eventually, they all run together because they share common tropes. I thought this one was going to as well, but I was pleasantly surprised. The ending was satisfying but also left me scratching my head and wanting more answers!

Definitely a very suspenseful book, kept me hooked and I struggled with putting it down.

But the ending… REALLY! So semi-climatic and underwhelming. Still a great book, just the ending could have been better.
