About this audiobook

Catalina only made her deal with the demon because she had nowhere else to go. The world has kicked her every chance it got, so she’s all too happy to leave the realm she knows behind. What’s the worst that could happen?

She doesn’t anticipate being auctioned away to a kraken.

Thane is cold and distant…but he’s not unkind. Isolated as they are, Catalina finds herself seeking his company again and again. And when she finally agrees to uphold her portion of the bargain?

That’s when things get really interesting.

But she only gave the demon seven years, and when the time is up, she’ll have no choice but to leave behind the kraken who’s stolen her heart and return to the world that doesn’t want her.

Katee Robert

New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Katee Robert learned to tell her stories at her grandfather's knee. Her 2015 title, The Marriage Contract, was a RITA finalist, and RT Book Reviews named it "a compulsively readable book." When not writing sexy contemporary or romantic suspense, she spends her time playing imaginary games with her children, driving her husband batty with what-if questions, and planning for the inevitable zombie apocalypse.

The characters Catalina and Thane are pretty endearing. Although i cant help but think “YALL NEED THERAPY” through out the book. Like no amount of magical squirmy dinaling ding dongs and enthusiatic punanynay is gonna heal them from their traumas. The idea of therapy WAS breifly touched upon. but it was breifly mentioned by Catalina and Thane never got any counseling. So despite their future as a couple being bright and fluffy…. i cant help the nagging feeling that it can turn into a unhealthy co-dependency if they dont adress it. Sure theres a promise of communication between the two characters as they get to know each other but still. they both need the professional help. There is a plot point that was huge glaring Red flag with sirens that had my stomach rolling that really needed to be addressed and really really warrants a therapy session but was a completely swept away with the power of mindblowing orgasms. In the last book, there were consequences and i wished it was applied here too.

Awkward segway aside, I listened to this book right after The Dragon’s Bride (the first book of the series) and they have the same narrators. I was pleasantly surprised how good the Narrators brought life to Catalina and Thane. I particularly enjoyed their performance and the nuances theygave to the characters sometimes messy internal monolgue. Lessa Lamb’s characterization of Catalina is such a delight to listen to!! The delicate balance of self deprication and still kindda funny(?) had me like “Saaauuurrr Truuuee, sauuurrr meeee”. Idk how to explain?. I’m still on the fence with Jack Calihan’s performance though??? Dont get me wrong he did a great job with Thane, the deep gravely voice fit the character perfectly…. But it takes me out when he reads dialogue from female characters in a falsetto voice especially during sex scenes and more serious moments. I found my self pausing the audio book to have a bit of a laugh. He’s trying his best!!!! Maybe i’m just not used to audiobooks I guess?? Or maybe I find Katee Robert’s writing of Thane to be a bit too similar to Dragon Bride’s Sol at times especially during tender moments.

This was also my first time experiencing an character who prefers using Xe/Xir/Xem gender neutral pronouns and i highly appreciate their depiction.

⚠️TW: Abortion and a bit of a spoiler
One of of my favorite things about the Deal with a Demon series, there is a hard emphasis of Consent, safe sex practices, body autonomy and the system in place to ensure the safety of the human female leads in this monster world. And in this book the Couple™️ dont want children and when there was a pregnancy scare and abortion was brought up. I really liked how Katee Roberts handles it with grace and compassion. The characters were not shamed for their choice and if they were asked if they regret their desicion it was immediately shut down and life moves on. I, as a reader who also prefers the childless lifestyle really appreciates it.

TLDR; I enjoyed the book, the sex scenes are *chef’s kiss, romance… could be better. But we all know we’re here for the monsterfricking no shame in that.

Seriously, this girl is all about herself.
"I'm bored. Entertain me. Keep me company. Me me me!!" OMG. This girl is such a brat. I finally had to stop listening because I really couldn't handle her anymore. This girl is poison and so no wonder everyone wants to get away from her. She is more than a handful and she doesn't know when to quit. It's not cute. There is no remorse or feeling of trying to change or grow for the better. It's all just "don't send me away; don't leave me alone. Please pay attention to me. "

Blah. Just let her drown. She's so annoying.

Spoiler alert ⚠️ I hate the abortion part, and I would have enjoyed it more if the female lead wasn't always talking down about herself. Very annoying

I was super disappointed. When I started the book it had a lot of potential but it just kept getting worse. A lot of unnecessary emotional chaos and triggers(not all on the warning). Definitely not a feel good book at all.

Tentacles...oh my...I was nervous. Coming from the last book in the series I was wary about this character but it was fun to see their dynamics and all the scenes in between.

    Well, that was quick!

Think I liked this better than book 1. Maybe it's cause I related to the fmc more in this book than in book 1. Regardless, this was a winner and I'm excited to see what will happen in book 3.

I love how Katee Robert was able to mix monster-mates and women struggles so effortlessly. i really thought this was some cliche read but I was, thankfully, mistaken. I love it!

This is fine. Almost an adventure book, we got to learn more about this universe. But the couple didn't draw me in, and I was actually kind of indifferent to the guy. I appreciate his groveling but it wasn't enough for me to actually like him.
