About this audiobook

From the New York Times bestselling author of Mexican Gothic comes a sweeping romance with a dash of magic.

They are the Beautiful Ones, Loisail’s most notable socialites, and this spring is Nina’s chance to join their ranks, courtesy of her well-connected cousin and his calculating wife. But the Grand Season has just begun, and already Nina’s debut has gone disastrously awry. She has always struggled to control her telekinesis—neighbors call her the Witch of Oldhouse—and the haphazard manifestations of her powers make her the subject of malicious gossip.

When entertainer Hector Auvray arrives to town, Nina is dazzled. A telekinetic like her, he has traveled the world performing his talents for admiring audiences. He sees Nina not as a witch, but ripe with potential to master her power under his tutelage. With Hector’s help, Nina’s talent blossoms, as does her love for him.

But great romances are for fairytales, and Hector is hiding a truth from Nina — and himself—that threatens to end their courtship before it truly begins.

Silvia Moreno-Garcia's The Beautiful Ones is a charming tale of love and betrayal, and the struggle between conformity and passion, set in a world where scandal is a razor-sharp weapon.

Editor's Note

Pushing boundaries…

It’s difficult to articulate the genre of “The Beautiful Ones” — part novel of manners, part Regency romance, part fantasy, all creating a lyrically lush work. All of Moreno-Garcia’s works (“Mexican Gothic,” “Gods of Jade and Shadow”) are vastly different from each other as she pushes the boundaries of beautiful storytelling.

In reality, I give it a 4.5. I was definitely entertained, and the love triangle drama was good. I love how the author described the characters. I could picture them in my mind. However, I felt like the ending could have been more detailed.

This was a reread, narration is great but it is missing the final chapter of part 1 which is a bummer

Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s writing is always delightful. This one was predictable but pretty. I genuinely enjoyed this read/listen(?).

It was nice I’m not normally a romance person but I was pleased the drama was good and the descriptions were top notch!
I liked it and it took me and my coworkers far away as we were reading it was nice.

I have never read a book that made me want to make my interior house design green.
I am not expecting to love this book because I'm not that guy who loves romance that much.
For those people who have loved THE NIGHT CIRCUS by Erin Morgenstern, this book shares the same magical vibe.
This is a romance book with some hints of magical elements to it.
    Highly Recommended!
I am currently reading ??? ???? ?? ??? ???? by ??????? ???????? and I am almost done with it but I don't want to rush myself finishing that book because I want to savor every last page of it! So I picked this up instead.
I just randomly watched a book review of this novel from Youtube and that person rated it 5 stars on Goodreads.
I was intrigued because this book also has magic (As I said above). The main characters have telekinesis. And the setting reminded me of Colonial Spain Era.

My favourite part of the book was Nina - the main character. She was young and naive but still strong, bold and smart for the most part. This is a love story that flirts with a “magic”. But the magic aspect is very minimal. It’s not a story about magic per se; only that people in this made up universe have some “talents”. They are not vilified nor celebrated. Rather they are seen as entertainment at best.

I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this book but it was good enough for me to consume in one day.

I enjoyed it. Has some cliché characters and it is predictable, but also that makes it enjoyable

Great story, but the audiobook seems to be missing the last chapter of part 1 (in the print book). I don't know if it's a purposeful abridgedment or just a different edition, but it's a shame because I think it's an important chapter that explains Nina's experience and motivations that lead into what she's doing at the beginning of part 2, and I think it's an important chapter for Nina's character in general.

A good read. Not something that I normally read. The author tells a good story
