This is not a genre that I would typically read; however, I’m so glad that I did. It was a little slow at the beginning and I wasn’t sure that I wanted to continue on. I was already quite a ways in and I wasn’t hooked. However, I forged on and all of sudden out of nowhere it grabbed me. It was right after the wedding. I actually missed the characters when I was stuck at work. Some people claim there is a ton of sex but I didn’t find that to be the case at all. They definitely make love quite a bit bit they’re newlyweds and it never seemed distasteful. I can’t wait to listen to the next book!

I discovered the books about 15 years ago. It was the pretty blue color that made me pick it up. After the reading of the synopsis.......I was already addicted. These books got me through a very difficult time in my life. I love Davina’s narration. She does such a wonderful job.

I love the passion between Jaime and Claire. There is no hero or heroine of the story they save each other.

The time traveling adventure story is best when it tells of Claire’s blending with 18th century Scottish society. She is a 20th century physician and her medical knowledge impresses her new hosts. She is a Sassenach (Englishman) and she may be spying on them. Her husband’s six times removed grandfather looks uncannily like her husband, but is vicious and scheming. Keeping out of his clutches is a main story line.

For me, the romance between Claire and Jamie is seriously overdone. They can’t leave each other alone and the details are more than I need. Then there is the obsessive romantic infatuation between Black Jack Randall and his unwilling victim, Jamie.

This first volume in a series was too sex-obsessed to interest me in subsequent books.

The best book. I tried to read the book and just couldn’t get into it at first. But I didn’t give up and thank goodness I didn’t. I just ordered the cookbook. I am totally sold. Please, please don’t make that thing of beauty stop.

Wonderful read. I feel like i learned so much about how to be bold when the odds are not in my favor. Reparenting yourself in the middle ages is a really clever, apt metaphor for how i feel most days.

I can't finish this book. It's ridiculous. I love the series, they changed this that made more sense. What made me quit was the conversation Jamie and Claire had after he "punished her". Gosh, I couldn't stand it.

I watched the series before listening to the book and the voices and accents of each character
were very close. The audio was very well done and Diana Gabaldon is a fantastic writer. Hoping to find the rest of the series.

This is a book/series with which I used to be quite obsessed, and now I kind of shrug about it. They're good stories, but maybe after five readings or so the novelty has worn off to the point that I notice the errors and moments of awkward writing as much as I do the storytelling. I read this when I did because the next volume was due out soon, and the list of characters and the series is so long and complicated that without a recent re-read, when I read a new addition, I find myself not knowing who a great deal of the people are who keep popping up in the pages. I keep waiting for the "magic" to start again, where I get swept into the story and really enjoy it... haven't given up hope completely yet.

The year is 1945. Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon--when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach--an "outlander"--in a Scotland torn by war and raiding Highland clans in the year of Our Lord...1743....When I first selected this story to read, I had no reference point of other reader to start from. I happened upon it by accident on the website audible.com. I actually listened to the 1st 5 books, then read the last two books. I selected it because I love books about time travel. I fell in love with because it was romance, history, and drama at its best. The narrator did a fabulous job numerous characters acted out in voice. I am anxiously waiting the next installment.

Boring, slow, and uncomfortable. I’m not a fan of almost rape and actual rape. Thought the book would be better than the show and it wasn’t. It was just awfully paced, and the only thing that saved it was the narrator. I won’t be continuing.

Also there was a part where Jamie’s sister was describing what it was like to be pregnant. Maybe I heard wrong but it was fine at first then just got plain weird and sexual?? Like why? No thank you!

2.5 stars. Not my type of genre. It had a few moments of decency and hilariously ridiculous lines, but it is a really lengthy read that at times had me uninterested. Even at 2.0x speed I wanted it to be over sooner. And to think there are 9 books in the series.

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon was a book that hovered around the edges of my To Be Read list for several years. Many friends of mine had read it - and the following books in the series - and with their recommendations and other positive press, the title had a certain amount of buzz about it so that I became interested enough to finally pick up a copy and read it. I went into the book not knowing too much about the plot besides that it was a historical epic set in Scotland. That was enough to whet my interest, but the subject that really piqued my curiosity was time travel. The story begins with nurse Claire Randall reunited with her husband after World War II. Though this setting would have made for enough of an adventuresome plot, the fantasy element of the story is brought in when Claire is inexplicably transported back in time to the Scottish highlands in the 1700's. Claire's husband's ancestor is the villain of the time and the out of place heroine finds refuge with a Scottish clan - and a young man named Jamie who soon wins her heart. Claire is torn between the exciting adventure of the times she finds herself in and the desire to find her way back home and as the book progresses, the reader is drawn fully into her dilemma. With vivid scenery and plenty of characters to love and hate, there are numerous reasons to be enamored with this book. My favorite aspect, though, is that it is a novel that defies genre classifications. It is historical fiction, action, fantasy, romance, and adventure seamlessly wrapped up into an epic story. I didn't know what to expect when I first began Outlander but I find myself eager to discover where Gabaldon will take this excellent series in future books!
