About this audiobook

Diana Gabaldon is the New York Times bestselling author of Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, Voyager, and Drums of Autumn. A masterful novel of passion and a love spanning centuries, The Fiery Cross is the highly anticipated, triumphant continuation of the phenomenally popular Outlander series.

Eighteenth-century Scotsman James Fraser and his 20th-century time-travelling wife, Claire Randall, have emigrated to the beautiful countryside of the Royal Colony of North Carolina. The year is now 1771, and dissidents are stirring throughout the American colonies. Claire forewarns James
of the impending war and the dangers it may bring to their clan. Will her knowledge of America’s tumultuous revolution be enough to guide them through a dangerously uncertain future?

Editor's Note

On the screen…

It’s hard to categorize this genre-bending time-traveling historical romantic adventure. The love Jamie and Claire share is truly epic, worthy of the centuries and continents (and 50+ hours-long audiobooks) the story spans to tell of it. The “Outlander” series is everyone’s favorite guilty pleasure on Starz; the fifth season ends in May, so we’re recommending you read the fifth book, “Fiery Cross.”

Way too long and too many details. Half as long and it would have been better

This is book 5 of the Outlander series. I love this book. This is an important book in the Outlander series in that it contains many character defining moments.

These books get progressively worse, and honestly, Briannas breasts had more character development than Brianna herself. But brilliantly narrated, great to have droning in the background while doing other things. The writer loves to hear (read?) herself talk and the book could have been half as long.

Romance, adventure, mystery, history all in this one endearing book! The Outlander series is nothing short of exceptional. You don’t want to put it down. Davina Porter sounds much like Claire in the series which makes it that much more special. I recommend everyone read or listen to this whole series you won’t be disappointed!

Diana’s story telling is phenomenal & Davina Porter is an exceptional narrator. Both these women deserve all the praises they get.

The fifth installment of the saga of Claire and Jamie. My recommendation: Read them in order, otherwise you literally loose the plot. Previous things get mentioned frequently without much of an explanation. And although I read all of them except for no. 2, I kept asking my mum (huge fan and proud owner of the compendium…) “what’s that, who’s this, what happened again there…?” No wonder with about a 1000 + pages a pop. A must for fans, although my mum and I both found this one here not exactly thrilling. Number 5 is getting a bit tired. The books, in order: “Cross Stitch”, Claire steps through the stone circle for the first time and gets transported back to the Scottish highlands of the 18th century, meets a mysterious stranger in a kilt and the rest is history……”Dragonfly in Amber”, where Claire and Jamie try to help Bonnie Prince Charlie…..”Voyager”, where Scottland gets increasingly unfriendly and the have to make tracks….”Drums of Autumn”, where they start afresh in the colony of North Carolina….“The Fiery Cross”, where the British start to piss the colonists off. Adventure, romance, swashbuckling, kilts, vengance and whatnot. Forget all those other trimetravelling romantic adventures. This was the first.

I must say that I really must love DG in order to have read this one after everyone telling me how horrible it was going to be. After reading it I must declare myself a hardcore Outlander Series fan. *yay me!*

All the books in the Outlander series are pretty much bricks, however even though they’re extremely long they’re so good that you don’t even notice the pages flying by. There’s action, adventure, mystery, etc. With this one I don’t want to say it was all boring because it wasn’t but it was 979 pages of nothing. I really don’t think anything happened that was critical to the story line. The plot lines that were left off in Drums of Autumn were not resolved in this one. If anything I was left with even more questions. However, there were moments in this book that were very exciting but it just took 400 pages to get there. DG definitely could have used an editor in this one.

What was great about this book was the development of the character relationships. The readers really got to see how Jaime and Claire’s relationship have developed into this loving no-need to talk relationship, while Bree and Roger have overcome the humps in their relationship and have grown closer. I even found the secondary character relationships and interactions interesting. The last couple of chapters were very exciting and left me wanting more.

The outlander series I've been reading since forever!! I thought this one was very slow going. Liked Jaimie and Clare, dont' like Roger. Seems like she is bent on torturing him, to show his worth. there will be another sequal, as this one ended just before teh british war, and Ian returning from the mohawks.

My God. This is a wonderful series of books. Better than the TV series, which is very, very good. Just can’t get enough of story. Narration is EXCELLENT, too.

While this book is likely the weakest written of her series, Diana Gabaldon has once again produced a terrific read! The hard copy of this book is 500+ pages so it’s not for the faint of heart.

Series review: Fascinating and mostly very readable series even if it gets a little bit soap opera like at times. Rich with historical detail and description.

This book got me back into the series. I was more into the oncoming revolutionary war and most definitely with all of the little things that ignited the flame. I found it to be very interesting, historically speaking, as well. There wasn't as much action, but it still held my interest. I was surprised to see such a low rating on Amazon, but once I read a few of them, I figured out why they didn't like it as much... not enough sex and too much history. Well, I thought it was good and a must read for those interested in the series.

Fifth volume in the Outlander series. While I enjoyed the book, I didn't feel it moved along as well as the others--it started with 2-300 pages of the first day. Doesn't make me long to go back to live in those days.

EXCELLENT! Devine Porter’s narration is exquisite! For me, it’s better than watching the series on TV, and I really like the TV series.

I've read the first 4 books in the series so quickly, I couldn't put them down. Book 5 in the series The Fiery Cross I lagged motivation to get through. I found I had to encourage myself to plug along to finish. Halfway through the story did improve and I was a little more eager to finish it. I'm not quite sure why I found it so hard to get through... perhaps it was because it detoured a little from the characters lives and dealt more with the politics leading up to the upcoming war.I am now halfway through A Breath of Snow and Ashes and once again find myself unable to put it down.Love...Love...Love this series!!!!!

As much as i love Diana Gabaldon's books and this series, I struggled through this one most of the time. I'm in the process of rereading the series and I remember having a time of it the first time around as well. I found it a bit too dragged out in many parts. Really, not a huge amount of progress in the overall plot of the series happens. They spend a lot of time planning and plotting how to find and kill Bonnet. They spend a lot of time thinking about what he did to Brianna. The first 200 or so pages alone takes place over a day or two at the Gathering. Everything that does happen is described in minute detail. It covers about 2 years in time, from the time Jemmy is an infant to where he's a bit over 2 years old, i think, no more than 3.Having said that, I can't rate the book badly because I do love the characters and even as a bridge to the next book, it's still good.

Love it! The time travel, contrast between WWII and the 2nd Jacobean Rising, the romance (cause c'mon, who waouldn't want their own Jamie?), and how well Gabaldon ties it all together and makes it make sense. I can't wait to see what else she'll do!

Gabaldon's dialogue is superb! As this is the fifth book in the series, I feel that I have come to know the major characters quite well. I can hear Jamie talk, and even see the way he moves. These books read like a TV drama series, but one unlike any ever seen before, because they would be so long, because you wouldn't want to loose any details. I would recommend this series to anyone! Although, be warned...the first day in the story goes for a long, long time!

This is a great series to listen to in audio book because it moves slowly and inexorably along the plot, while presenting different perspectives to the story that is developing. And often, Diana Gabaldon writes one of the characters making a quirky observation - it brings the characters alive. Of course, this is only improved by the vocal flexibility of Davina Porter, the narrator.
