Description
"By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late. Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.” But he answered, “You give them something to eat.” They said to him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?” (Mark 6:35-37) In this passage, Jesus has just learned that his cousin, John the Baptist was beheaded in prison. Jesus was trying to mourn, but thousands of people wouldn't leave him alone. He teaches them for a while, but then it's dinner time and the disciples are ready to pack up and call it a night. But Jesus, who is grieving and exhausted, suggests they do even more work. He tells the disciples they're on kitchen duty. Where exactly will they get all this food to feed thousands? We'll find out more about that in the days ahead. But there's still something we can discover about God in today's verses. His compassion exceeds what seems normal and His provision exceeds what seems possible. He's where the joy is!
