This book presents a New Blueprint for Fitness™ based on the latest discoveries in scientific exercise and nutrition. It was born from my personal experience of abandoning an old blueprint that I had been following for 20 years and adopting a new blueprint as prescribed by expert personal trainers. I began this journey believing that I was in excellent physical condition. But, I was relying on the same exercise and nutrition plan that I had been using for 20 years—my old blueprint. I had put this blueprint together during my high school, college, and young adult years. I was completely unaware that a revolution had taken place in exercise and fitness while I was busy building a career and raising a family.

    Then Tom showed up.

Tom was a college friend who had spent 20 years building a successful fitness business. He was in better physical condition at age 50 than he had been thirty years before. Tom had studied sports fitness and nutrition and applied all that he had learned to his own health. Over the years, as science discovered and created better ways to remain fit, Tom adopted these discoveries and created a program to maintain ultimate fitness by investing an hour a day. On top of this he created a philosophy of living that he uses with busy clients to convince them that they really do have the time to live a healthy life, as long as they believe that their health is an important priority.

The health and fitness program that I learned from Tom is laid out in this book. Tom’s principles and practices are clearly presented, easy to understand, and expressed as simple non-negotiable new habits for daily living. These principles have worked for Tom’s own personal fitness, for his clients who have followed them, and for me when I accepted that his program as a new blueprint for fitness that is significantly different from what I had pieced together on my own.

I had been using an old and outdated blueprint for fitness for two decades. The results that I achieved were very limited and my internal and external body looked like a middle aged person from the 1970’s, which is far from the superior fitness that can be developed using the new scientific knowledge that has emerged in recent years. This science makes up the new blueprint that mature people are using to create incredible health and an incredible body.

"I believe in the power of an F5 tornado—the Fit 50 year old.

F5 is a mature and powerful adult with a mission to transform their life and their body. In meteorology it is also a storm with wind speeds that can destroy homes and throw automobiles like they are baseballs. Same power."

    The Old Blueprint

When we talk about a Blueprint for Fitness we mean the pattern of beliefs and behaviors that people put together to guide their healthy and unhealthy lifestyles. Most people create their own blueprint from physical education classes during high school and college; add the knowledge imparted by their sports coaches; and pickup odd bits of information from magazines and television programs over the years. By the time they reach mature adulthood they have a mind full of confusing facts about health and fitness which they try to apply haphazardly every day. By age 40 most people assume that they have learned everything they need to know about fitness and they stop searching for new tips, tricks, and programs. But the science of fitness marches on without them. They become stuck to an old blueprint while the leaders in health and fitness are creating a new and more effective blueprint.

This book is a call for you to abandon your old blueprint and adopt a new blueprint which will lead to a level of health and fitness that is far beyond what you have experienced before and beyond what you thought you could achieve at this stage in your life.

Unfortunately, 90% of the population spends 90% of their life ignoring their personal fitness. Every New Year’s Day they make a resolution to return to a healthier lifestyle. To accomplish this they brush off their old blueprint for fitness and try to follow it … for 3 or 4 weeks. This is the time of year when most gym memberships and exercise equipment are sold. The entire nation refocuses on fitness, exercise, and healthy eating for about four weeks. But by the time the calendar clicks over to February, everyone has dropped their New Year’s Resolution and is back to their old lifestyle. The gym membership card disappears on the top of the dresser. The new equipment becomes a clothing rack. Television time replaces the daily trip to the gym. The vegetables rot in the refrigerator while the chips and cookies come back into the pantry.

Then there is a second, but smaller, wave of fitness a few months later. These same people return to their fitness resolution around the beginning of May when they think about summer at the beach or pool. They look at their belly and decide they need to get into bikini shape before summer kicks off. So they hunt up that gym membership card, clean the clothes off of the tread mill in the
