Definition
The term dietary fiber is called vegetable carbohydrates that cannot be digested in a person's small intestine, and therefore they differ from other carbohydrates such as: starch and sugars that are digested in the intestine. Because these fibers are not digestible, they reach the large intestine and colon as is.
Dietary fibers are divided into soluble fibers such as: pectin and beta-glucan in oats and fruits, and other insoluble ones such as: cellulose found in whole grains and nuts. It should be noted that both types are found in foods rich in fiber. Research has shown that a diet rich in fiber can help increase the good bacteria in the gut that feed on these fibers to produce substances believed to protect against diseases and cancer such as: short chain fatty acids.
