Introduction
I want to tell you a story about my friend, Louis. Louis has always had an amazing outlook on life, he always sees the best in everyone and makes the best of every situation that comes his way, whether it appears to be good or bad. Louis has a way of making even the worst of situations appear as blessings. He has this light about him that is inspiring. He knows how to handle stress and pressure and does so with confidence and patience. Louis is a guy you feel joy being around, it is almost as if he has the power to make wonderful things happen for himself and those around him. The kind of guy that always leaves a good impression on you and is the one you always call when you need a little advice or support. Louis is a very humble man and enjoys all of the simple blessings in life that most people don’t even notice. Louis is a hard worker; he owned an old Victorian home that was his pride and joy. It was over 100 years old! One day, while Louis was doing a little work upstairs a fire had started in the kitchen on the main floor. This fire began to spread, and at a quick pace. It finally reached the room Louis was in and he couldn’t believe his eyes. First, he was in shock and as the flames roared all around him, getting closer, he began to become filled with fear. His emotions had been overcome with the fear and worry that he may not be able to get out alive. He thought there was a good chance that this was it for him, this fire would take him out and he began to tremble, and his heart began to race, he wasn’t able to see clearly, let alone think clearly. As Louis stood there frozen in fear a thought came before him, he realized he needed to step away from his fear and come back to reason.
Louis decided he needed to take control of his emotions.
He could get out of this alive, if he made the right moves and decisions, he could outsmart this fire and get to safety. Finally, after telling himself to calm down, his body began to listen, he stopped trembling, his fear subsided, and he was filled with a feeling that he could win. He could figure this out and be okay. Louis wanted to live and decided to take control of his emotions rather than let them take control of him. As the fire viciously roared, Louis made a decision. Louis decided no matter how angry this fire got; he would remain calm. He began looking around the room, the window was far too small for him to break and make his way out of, that was not an option. He knew he had to think quickly, but he remained positive that he could and would get out unharmed. The fire got closer, he felt a feeling of panic pass over him again, however, he let the feeling come and go. He did not hold onto it. Just as the fire was inching closer and closer, he could feel the warmth on his face, Louis remembered something. With all the excitement that was going on, he completely forgot that his house is so old it still had many different hidden staircases in the walls! Stairs that led directly outside. Years ago, these stairwells were used to let maids and cooks into the home without having to enter through the main door of the home. It was their own separate entrance. Now, this stairwell was going to be the stairwell to free Louis of this fire and get him to safety. As Louis was being backed up against the wall due to the fire taking over the room, he realized the door was just behind him. With great emphasis, he darted through the door and followed the steps that had not yet been scorched by fire and managed to get out onto the street. Louis had outsmarted the fire. Louis did not allow his initial reaction to the fire to take control of him, he did not let fear guide him, rather he was able to gather his thoughts and feelings and come up with a plan that ultimately saved his life.
So you may be wondering why I decided to tell you that story, you may feel happy for Louis but at the same time be left with a feeling of, Is there more to this story? Did you leave something out? What could I be missing? I just don't see the point.
Well, I wouldn't have shared that story without a reason or explanation for doing so. Let’s take a minute to celebrate Louis' success, good for him, right? Anyways, the reason I
