For most people, conversing about mental health is a definite no-no. They either avoid it with changing the topic or accept it but invalidate ones' feelings. I'm glad this book exist. It's not just opening the eyes of the many, but it also make those who read this realize that it's important that we learn different types of mental illnesses. Like Social Anxiety.

Callaway explains what social anxiety is in this book and how we cope if we have this kind of illness. He talks about the techniques and methods. He also differentiates symptoms and triggers and tells us what do we do when it happens. But we should know that undiagnosed is just as important as diagnosed, so if you like you have one, please don't be afraid to read this book to know yourself more. Or better yet, ask for professional help.

We never really know what people around us think or feel, so it is better if we read books like this. We become more aware, we become more careful and sensitive with our words and actions when we encounter people who show signs that they're anxious. Plus, we can also apply to ourselves what we learned from this book as it also focuses on possible ways and techniques how to battle our thoughts and have a better look in life. The book also teaches about how to socialize better and talk to other people that will be helpful in creating relationships and connections. This is a good guide into becoming more aware of the people around us and of ourselves.

Can I just say that this book has recharged my social battery that always runs out? Social anxiety really is a thing. At first, I did not understand why I always feel drained when I'm around people that I've just known. Sometimes I can't even bring myself to speak. It's lucky that I found this book as I searched for some tips on how to improve my social skills. It does provide all the details that every socially anxious people out there needs. Thank you to the writer of this book for the well-detailed information about social anxiety. I have always been assuming to myself that I have one since I am a very shy person who can't start a conversation and oftentimes, I struggle to open up to anyone even if the situation is already killing me big time. My heart goes to people who were diagnosed with SAD because although I am not diagnosed with one, I have stressful days of dealing with people and it's no joke to be even told by doctors that you have social anxiety. It's nice to know that you can actually find little ways to slowly mend what is broken by reading this book.

I devote the writer for providing us readers this invaluable material. Silently, many choose to keep their anxieties themselves for so many reasons. Social discrimination can be one reason that these individuals avoid, thus, they pretend to be okay in front other people. Writer has discussed the topic thoroughly and I believe he doesn’t miss anything unclear. I hope to read a lot more materials like this kind. Very informative!

As a person you never can deny the fact that sometimes anxiety will hit you in a snap. You will never ever know what it is until you felt it.

Living in a society with fear and stress can never be good, but reading this book can help you understand what it feels to be, how it needs to be and how to escape what it seems to be.

This book is recommendable and I really appreciate the author for this.

A friend recommend this book to me as I am really an anxious person and she knows it. For starters, this taught me that everyone is experiencing anxiety just in different degrees, some handles it well, and some succumbs to it. I'm more like in the middle ground. It's really hard having negative thoughts especially in dealing and interacting with new people. Thoughts of 'what ifs?' always clings to my mind every time and its really exhausting my mental stability sometimes. The way this book guide me on how to suppress these thoughts and how to overcome my worries and shyness really is great. Now, I can communicate to new people far more easily and I can see the improvement in my social skills whenever I'm in a social gathering. Thanks to this book.

I had a friend who really is scared in communicating with others when I asked him what's been bothering him in socializing he said to me that he had some experience being bullied because of his lacknof confidence in social skills and he was really scared with getting laughed at behind his back and infront of him. He hated giving personal information like facebook, instagram et cetera. I really pitied him that time so if I had this book that time I can lend him it and let him expand and build some self confidence. I recommend this book to people like your friend, or someone you know that is having some difficulties adjusting in our society.

There are a lot of self-help books out there, but I found this one to be extremely beneficial and life-changing. The first section of the book described social anxiety and who has it (basically everybody at varying levels but those who find it suffocates their lives will benefit the most from this book). He breaks down the origins of social anxiety to a very simple concept, distinguishing and presenting the relationship between social anxiety, introversion, and shyness. The remainder of the book is dedicated to other forms of social anxiety, as well as scenarios and exercises for resolving these debilitating feelings. In this way, I appreciate how realistic the book is since it is a structured program for managing social anxiety disorder that provides a self-evaluation as well as the resources to create a personalized plan for making life changes.

I finished reading the book just over a week ago, before attending a family get-together, and felt more comfortable conversing with people than I have for some time. I needed help to believe others are not judging everything I do and say and how I look. This book helped. I plan to re-read the book to reinforce the message. It takes time and practice to overcome social anxiety, and it's worth the effort.

Discourse about mental health remains a taboo for many and it is sad to hear amidst the increase of mental health awareness in our today's society. One of the mental health concerns that are rarely tackled is social anxiety. Hence, I was happy to finally find a book about it.

This is an excellent self-help book with thorough explanation about certain topics that are mostly left out from the conversation regarding the mental health of social anxious individuals. It elaborately presented information about anxiety within the social context and it provided clear description of methods on how to develop a positive attitude, improve social skills and gain confidence when it comes to handling real-life scenarios. It states in here that it takes a bit of practice and involvement in social situations to have control over your fears and finally have a meaningful conversations and interactions.

Social anxiety is a problem that you can solve on your own but this book also encourages readers to seek support and professional help to guide you while overcoming it thus breaking the stigma on mental health. It is a must-read for everyone!

As the title implies, this book's main focus is to help people with a diagnosed disease called SAD. Although I am not one, I can say that this book will be benefitial for those how have this kind of disorder. I like how the writer thoroughly explained what is SAD, how it is diagnosed, the causes and risk alongside it and how it affects the day to day life of the person with it. It is often mistaken that introverted people have SAD but this book cleared it up. As most self-help books do, this one give tips and how to's that can help the person reading overcome social anxiety.

It is not wise to self diagnose specially when it comes to mental health. If you're curious if you have SAD or not then you can "check" by reading this book. And if you're having a hunch that you really do have it as what is written in this book then I suggest you seek help from professionals. But in conclusion, this book is a great read for general knowledge. I'd recommend this to my friends who are interested to read about mental health, more specifically, social anxiety.

The stigma of mental health have seem to be lacking despite evident advancement in the society, and having a book like this which rigorously discuss social anxiety is necessary. Although this may not be a typical self-help book, the knowledge it impose to people is comprehensive, in-depth, and profound. It elaborates the key factors to social anxiety making it easy to read and understand by its readers. I appreciate the concept that it classifies the difference between being introvert and social anxiety; worry and fear. It doesn't just offer insights about the topic but encourages the need for medical support.

This book is a thick-set of information that tackles about social anxiety, mental health in general. Mental health is just as important with physical health. Some people, especially in Asia are not that open to such topic and tends to invalidate someone's feelings. Upon reading this book, I've known myself more in a way that I've known what is the right term to what I feel. Moreover, I've kept in mind the things that'll make me overcome such before it's too late for the reason that it made me aware to its effect it'll make in my life once it continue to creep in my being. Hoping for this book to be well-known for tackling such topic and am rooting that through this book, people will be more open and sensitive enough to apprehend what topic it entails.

Introduction

The times we're living in are unprecedented in many ways, and yet, deep down, we have hardly changed for thousands of years. What this means is that our lifestyle, technology, and many other things that shape our days have, in a way, surpassed us. Modern living certainly provides many comforts and perks; still, we often find ourselves naturally unequipped to deal with some of the challenges that these new ways of life have brought with them.

Some of the problems that used to be a freak occurrence - and only bothered particularly unfortunate individuals - are now becoming more commonplace. These problems include numerous forms of personality disorders and other mental health concerns, one of which is social anxiety. It is a sad and strange irony that social anxiety is an increasingly common problem in a time when our means of communication are more advanced and accessible than ever - and when the world is interconnected like never before.

Indeed, many folks from all walks of life seem to struggle with social interaction nowadays, so you're far from being alone. Social interaction is one of the critical aspects of the human experience, which is why social anxiety can not only deprive you of pleasant moments but also make your professional life suffer significantly. Folks who don't have such problems might not even realize it, but social interaction permeates a normal human life as few other things do. Getting even the most menial of tasks done can entail interaction, and when that becomes difficult, life can really take a downward turn.

Seeing as we are such social animals by nature, social skills are also one of the more important predictors of success. It's no secret that those who are adept at social situations tend to get ahead in many areas of life, especially when it comes to career opportunities and romantic prospects. Overall, social skills are one of the most critical areas to improve for a more fulfilled life.

The objective of this book is to help you do exactly that. If you have experience with social anxiety or suspect that you might, this book will teach you precisely what this disorder is and how it works, but also how you can mend the problem. Indeed, even though it's a complex issue that's still being researched, social anxiety is something that you can fight on your own, with moderate to great success.

It's important to understand that you are only one of many people with this problem and that there's nothing inherently wrong with you. Social anxiety can have numerous causes, but the cure is almost always the same or very similar. In the simplest possible terms, the issue revolves around a skill that you've lost and will have to master again. In the process, you will also master yourself.

By the end of this book, you will have a better understanding of what this disorder truly is, but you will also know much more about how exactly your brain works, particularly in relation to social anxiety. You will learn to differentiate between social anxiety and some other normal psychological processes or personality traits like introversion, fear, or plain old shyness.

While it's not a substitute for professional psychiatric help and therapy, this book contains up-to-date information and proven methods to overcome your anxiety. It will also help you on your journey toward greater self-development and awareness, both of which are important for achieving long-lasting peace of mind. In the process of overcoming your anxiety, you will become a more confident individual and will learn valuable skills in communication.

No matter how many bad experiences you've had and however hopeless your situation might feel, you are not beyond help. As you will find in this book, beating your social anxiety might be difficult, and it might feel like an uphill battle at times, which is why you'll need patience and perseverance, on top of a desire to get better. Nonetheless, it is a battle that every person has the strength to win. That strength must be unlocked, though, and this book will eventually help you do that. Without further ado, we will begin by looking at what social anxiety really is and where we are at when it comes to an understanding and treating this problem.

Chapter One: What Is Social Anxiety?

It is important to state that social anxiety is not merely shyness or introversion, although they might often correlate. Social anxiety is a diagnosed personality disorder, generally referred to as social anxiety disorder, or SAD for short. Social anxiety was formerly known as social phobia, which is a term that's still sometimes used. In the simplest terms, social anxiety is a sort of fear of social situations that stems from a feeling of inadequacy and a fear of being scrutinized in some way.

Everyone can get nervous about certain situations, particularly when they are important. For instance, many people tend to get nervous before an important job interview, even if they don't really have a social anxiety disorder. And even though this nervousness usually comes from the fear of scrutiny that a job interview will inevitably entail, it's still not social anxiety disorder by definition. Social anxiety implies a particularly intense and irrational fear that can completely cloud your mind and occurs automatically - even when you can't rationally identify what it is about a situation that scares you. The irrationality and intensity of the fearful reaction that social anxiety entails are why it's sometimes referred to as a social phobia.

The fact that we have evolved to be social creatures is something that makes social anxiety particularly tragic and problematic. Even when we have such a disorder and when our fear makes us think that we don't want to get into social situations, our minds still subtly crave the interaction and the contact. Prolonged isolation and a lack of intimacy or any social contact, however meaningful or not, can have dramatic consequences on our mental health, regardless of how sociable or unsociable, we think we are.

Of course, therefore, social anxiety often leads to feelings of loneliness and alienation. As you might know from experience, this is a difficult situation to be in because it feels like an awfully paradoxical trap where one loathes the prospect of getting into a social situation but feels the same way about their loneliness in the meantime. As such, a social anxiety disorder can lead to all sorts of complications when it comes to mental or even physical health, depending on the case. That's if the disorder is left unchecked, of course.

If you have only a moderate problem with social anxiety, you should certainly try to nip it in the bud. At this time, you might think that it only affects your social life and makes it difficult to make friends, but, over time, social anxiety can make many other areas of your life difficult, as we mentioned. If the problem can grow, you can find yourself going from feeling discomfort at a party to having your career stifled, or worse.

Seeing as it can have such far-reaching consequences for the quality of life and productivity of individuals, it's no surprise that social anxiety disorder is something that's of great concern for society. SAD (social anxiety disorder) is just one of the numerous forms of anxiety disorders that pose a problem, particularly in the West. In the United States, anxiety disorders affect some 40 million adults, making such disorders the most common form of mental health issue. On a yearly basis, around one-fifth of adult Americans will report being affected by some form of anxiety.

The incidence of social anxiety disorder is around 7% of the adult population
