The Ultimate Shadow Work Guide - Erika Moore
INTRODUCTION
Witchcraft and spirituality have lately gained popularity on social media, particularly on platforms like Tik Tok. Unfortunately, many people now see these practices as aesthetics,
which undermines their importance. For instance, these societies are frequently linked to astrology, chakras, and crystals. But at their core, spirituality, and witchcraft are about going on a journey of emotional healing and becoming your best self. Although astrology and crystals are wonderful tools for this path of self-discovery, they must be used in conjunction with more challenging forms of self-care for their benefits to be completely appreciated.
shadow work
refers to a crucial component of this individual journey. The term shadow work
is derived from the term shadow self,
which was first used by psychoanalyst Carl Jung to describe the shadowy aspects of the subconscious, such as unfavorable behavior patterns, worries, and self-esteem problems. Like many others, I have spent a long time trying to repress, minimize, and disregard certain areas of my life because I believed doing so would help me get closer to real happiness.
I started to realize, after learning about shadow work, that the secret to happiness and self-fulfillment isn't to concentrate just on the positive elements of life and of oneself. Instead, you can fully understand who you are on the inside and how to be the greatest version of yourself by incorporating both the good and bad parts of your mind into your self-view.
While accepting your shadow self's presence might be emotionally taxing and terrifying, the benefits are immeasurable. Because we frequently try so hard to avoid thinking about the aspects of ourselves we despise, it might be challenging even to acknowledge the inner healing that needs to occur. Fortunately, there are several methods to perform shadow work, and it may be customized as a personal practice to highlight the aspects of ourselves that require attention. For instance, journaling and therapy are two of the most well-liked types of shadow work.
Journaling as shadow work might differ from traditional journaling as many shadow work prompts push you to reflect carefully on areas of your life that you might otherwise disregard instead of just writing about how you feel now. Such suggestions may lead you to unearth suppressed emotions or trauma, identify the source of a certain poisonous habit, or even understand the reasons behind your worries and concerns.
Therapy can also be viewed as a type of shadow work as it results in similar findings. In reality, therapy helps us face our painful emotions and life experiences, which is incidentally the fundamental objective of shadow work. When starting their adventure into shadow work, some people could feel overwhelmed, especially if they do it alone. Therapy, therefore, offers a very advantageous option that permits the encounter to be just as intimate but perhaps less daunting.
Shadow work is a real avenue for sophisticated self-understanding because it enables us to relate to the events that gave rise to our anxieties, habits, and coping methods. Many people accept the unfavorable features of their identities as something that cannot be changed or that they would like to ignore. These attitudes, however, are only another coping that we may use to avoid facing our reality and absolve ourselves of responsibility for our actions.
Shadow work teaches us how to deal with these aspects of ourselves to grow while also enabling us to comprehend why we think and act in the ways we do.
Although the popularity of spirituality online has caused many people to disregard the importance of such practices, it has also made new types of self-care essential to leading fulfilled lives more widely known. Shadow work teaches us how to deal with these aspects of ourselves to grow while also enabling us to comprehend why we think and act in the ways we do. For instance, finding the reason for a fear or unhealthy habit might motivate us to heal the pain that gave rise to it and enable us to think or act differently in the future. By ending this cycle of toxic thoughts and actions, shadow work may liberate us from being imprisoned by our shadow selves and instead urge us to use the negative aspects of ourselves as tools for progress.
Chapter 1: TRANSCENDING THE DARKER ASPECTS OF YOURSELF
Shadow work is the highest kind of light work you can do.
We experience a sense of emptiness as elements of what makes us who we are disappear into the shadow.
What Is the Shadow?
The term shadow
brings up a lot of unpleasant and gloomy images for many individuals. As a result, it is easy to believe that shadow work is an evil spiritual exercise that draws on our personalities' dark and dangerous sides.
The shadow is dark because we are made up of both light and dark elements. However, it is part of who we are, and we can't be afraid of ourselves.
Carl Jung, a psychologist, introduced the shadow to Western culture for the first time. He defined it as the unacknowledged and unconscious aspects of our personalities that the ego cannot recognize, accept, or see. It is any part of us that is hidden from the awareness of our consciousness.
While we are whole and complete when born, this state does not last long. The shadow emerges throughout our formative years due to specific interactions with those closest to us. We are led to believe by our caregivers that certain aspects of ourselves are positive and others are negative. The elements that are seen negatively are rejected and, as a result, take the form of the shadow.
The Effects of the Shadow on You
When we depend on our caregivers for survival, we emphasize the positive features and hide the negative ones.
Consider a 5-year-old boy who is extremely in tune with his emotions as a case study. He has emotional sensitivity. He becomes upset and weeps once anything happens. In response, his dad says, Stop crying like a little boy, be a man!
His father stifles his son's emotions as he believes crying is bad. This causes the latter to repress his delicate and vulnerable side and start acting tough.
He struggles with emotions as an adult and won't express them even when necessary. He struggles in relationships; as a result, he never allows himself to be completely seen.
The shadow grows every time you repress.
Another illustration is a little girl's tantrum because she is upset about something. Her mother immediately commands her to Stop it! Stop being so bad!
Mom says the same thing each time she becomes enraged: to calm down and be a good girl.
The little girl believes that being angry must be bad. I have to work at not getting angry.
She eventually separates herself from her anger, yet it is still there.
She is raised with the idea that she must constantly have it together.
Later, she discovers she has trouble at work because people push her buttons. She often feels like she will explode, and she is helpless. She understands that her anger is always present, erupting in passive-aggressive ways and causing problems at work.
The Role of the Subconscious Mind
We might refer to the subconscious mind as the shadow because we cannot see it clearly and are thus unaware of it. The conscious mind is like the light because we can see and know it clearly.
Everything we disapprove of and find undesirable about ourselves is absorbed into our subconscious.
As soon as you label anything as bad,
you have a reason to bury, dismiss, and reject it. The shadow is invisible, but it still impacts everything we do.
When we deny a part of ourselves, it does not disappear. It simply vanishes from our conscious awareness. If we don't pay attention to the shadow, which has a life of its own, it can significantly impact our actions and experiences in life.
The shadow is the reason we act in particular ways without realizing why.
As we become older, we believe that we should be able to manage life better, but we continue to engage in the same destructive behaviors. That's because the shadow, which manifests as unconscious and restricting ideas, acts outside our conscious awareness.
The Shadow Is Not Just Dark and Negative
The shadow contains so many gifts, potentials, and talents that have not yet been unearthed. The darkness may also swallow up great things.
Let's imagine a girl has a strong sense of self from birth. She is not scared to express her opinions as she knows who she is, what she loves, and what she does not like. While she is a strong young child, her family has always urged her to tone it down because it is too much.
The parts of her that are confident and strong are rejected, so she rejects those parts of herself.
She becomes a gentle, affectionate, and submissive
