    Introduction

Memory, learning, and forgetting—three key concepts in the mosaic of human existence that are so intricately linked that it is almost impossible to compartmentalize them. They share brain resources and target activities and are often afflicted by the same maladies.

In this book we will try to dissect each of them and look at their respective distinct characteristics, the problems that affect each one, and possible solutions to the problems.

Memory underlies the basic signature of our identity as species, cultural beings, and individuals. Without memory we would flounder. The chapters on memory will not only explain these links, but show how memory can be improved to our advantage.

When we think about learning, children of school-going age immediately spring to mind. While they definitely are confronted with their fair share of learning, the information in the chapters about learning specifics will show how fundamental our capacity to learn remains throughout our whole adult life.

Problems with forgetfulness especially often cause great anxiety in older adults and the specter of diseases such as Alzheimer’s is forever looming in their minds. In the chapters about the A to Z of forgetting, the main danger signals in this area will become clear and hopefully some worried minds will be put to rest.

    The Holistic Approach

Holism is an integrative approach that has been followed throughout this ebook. It views human beings as whole units, not loose standing assemblies of mind, body, spirit, and heart. Proponents of this model believe the meaning of the parts can only be fully understood when viewed against the whole (Miller, n.d.).

When looking at a neuron for instance, it is impossible to deduce what the whole brain is like. It is only when you look at the brain in totality that all the parts start to fit together and make sense.

For our purposes, it is important because it seeks to understand memory, forgetting, and education as integral parts of the human experience and not processes that occur outside our sphere of experiences. Any memory instantly becomes part of our makeup and can influence any other part of our being.

In educational psychology this means that anything learned becomes more than it was before when it is weaved into the fabric of our existence.

In a holistic approach memory and learning cannot be separated from all the internal and external factors that influence a specific person. A holistic practitioner giving study tips will look at a student’s total situation in relation to the problem, before making any recommendations.

Some drawbacks of this model, although very useful, are that it can make explanations and solutions more complex than they have to be.

This also sometimes lends itself to generalizing instead of pinpointing isolated problem areas that need more attention.

    Practical Usefulness

All practice requires some amount of theory for exercise techniques to be fully understood and properly utilized. The main
