Description

In this week's episode of the Over 50 Health and Wellness Podcast, I dive into the important yet rarely discussed topic of body dysmorphia. I start by getting vulnerable and sharing my own lifelong journey with body image issues, from feeling skinny and weak as a teenager to battling weight gain and “man boobs” in my 40s.  I explain that body dysmorphia doesn’t discriminate – it can affect people of all ages and body types. As we age, it’s easy to become distressed over the natural changes happening to our bodies. But it goes beyond just vanity - our body image is connected to our self-perception and sense of belonging in the world.   First, I define body dysmorphia as a disorder where you obsess over minor or even nonexistent flaws in your appearance. I emphasize that the first step is simply recognizing when our perceptions are distorted. Then, I share practical strategies for overcoming body dysmorphia: practicing mindfulness, expressing gratitude for what our bodies can do, setting reasonable fitness goals focused on health rather than looks alone, and seeking professional help from a counselor or support group. Next, I examine the double-edged sword of fitness. Exercise can boost mood and body confidence, but it can also trigger comparison and negative self-talk if we become preoccupied with chasing an unrealistic image. I encourage listeners to celebrate fitness accomplishments like walking farther or lifting heavier. Remind yourself that you’re not in competition with anyone but your own former self.  In closing, I reiterate that overcoming body dysmorphia is an ongoing journey. The key is self-awareness, patience, and self-compassion. I want listeners to focus on becoming the healthiest version of themselves at this stage of life. Our bodies and journeys are unique and beautiful. Sponsor Information – Living Libationswww.silveredgefree.com Nina Manolson Podcast - From Body-War to Body-Peacehttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-over-50-health-wellness-podcast/id1510989063?i=1000577211290Want to rewrite the narrative of your life and health?
