Description

This episode is the most significant audio project I've ever started.  My Dad, Humberto Gonzalez, isn't just my idol and best friend, he's an executive that has built and sold three $100M+ companies, in the United States, Latin America, and Europe.  But here, we focus on his ONE BIG FAILURE before recapping a remarkable career as a business executive and entrepreneur.  It's as much a masters class on the importance of cash flow in your business model, as an introspection into overconfidence and loss.  As you'll hear in the second half of the episode, my dad has had an epic life since fleeing Fidel Castro's Cuba with his family as a teenager shortly after the Cuban Revolution, pioneering tech and leverage buyout in the 80s, the building multiple $100M companies.  I plan to make his life into a multiple part series that will either be its own project or released in this podcast.  I'd LOVE to know what you think... should I prioritize this story or continue doing other interviews?  Shoot me an email to youshould@connectwithpablo.com (clever e-mail... I know... it was Nathan Ruff's idea, founder and CEO of Rabbit)Thank you to my mentee, Nikola Ivanov, for all the time stamps to all my episodes.  That kid is the smartest, hardest working 14-year old Bulgarian of all time.  He's going places!!0:00 Before Podcast(ish) discussion0:50 Where is Dad Right Now1:20 How Dad got started into entrepreneurship2:10 What did the business world give and take from Dad3:40 The Closest thing to war in a business world4:30 How Hurricane Helped Dad pick the best house for us7:00 How a Failure led to the biggest deal in the life of my Dad9:40 How do Software Businesses Work13:00 Creating The Biggest Tech Distributing company in Latin America16:40 Creating a Global Business before the Internet17:50 Why did the Business fail19:30 Why You Should ALWAYS use your specialty20:00 The First Year in Business21:00 The ONE harsh truth about Business22:10 The Cloud Takeover period24:40 The two things that slowed my dad’s business down26:20 The Lowest point in the business life of my dad27:40 How business kills the old school entrepreneurs29:55 The pitching strategy of my Dad32:00 The Social Media Advantage35:25 The Financial Scheme of The a Food Business36:25 How I sold my business and 2x Ed the price teaser37:00 The Wrong Way of Looking At Failure (The First Failure of My Dad)40:15 The biggest problem when losing the money of other people/investors41:20 Can a Personal Loss cloud your decision making?43:20 The worst year of Dad’s life and what helped him get through it46:00 My Dad’s life in Cuba and his immigration journey48:00 Being the only Spanish speaker in an English Kindergarden49:40 The World Before the Computer revolution50:00 The Life Of Dad After University51:35 The Betting game in Business52:20 The Man Who invested the desktop and LOST it all53:30 From Venezuela to the USA56:50 Becoming the Ultimate Company Problem solver58:30 How One Person made my Dad become his own boss1:00:40 How My Dad created his business plan for the US Market1:03:00 The Long Term Success of Dad1:03:40 What’s the Lesson Dad Learned from all these years in business1:04:15 Call Recap1:06:25 Stories Recap1:07:20-1:08:31 Recap of Dad’s Business historyLove the song on the show?? Nothing decreases the cost of acquisition and lifetime value of clients like a network of great relationships, and the ultimate version of that is a community designed around your clients and prospects. BUT where do you find the playbook that makes that happen? That is why this podcast exists. You'll learn that community building doesn't live in a vacuum. It has to coexist with a problem you are trying to solve, a category you are in (or better yet, designing yourself), and the culture you are building inside your organization. THE GOOD NEWS building up to it can have many short-term wins on the way, as long as you are strategic about it. This show will provide you the strategies you need to accomplish the ultimate goal of building a community around your business, and provide abilities to connect with experts in the disciplines needed to build a profitable company where ownership, employees, and clients genuinely like each other.
