Walter the Educator's Little German Recipes Cookbook - Walter the Educator

    One

    Walter's Black Forest Apple Cake

    Introduction:

Schwarzwälder Apfelkuchen is a unique twist on the traditional Black Forest Cake, a beloved German dessert. This recipe combines the flavors of the famous Black Forest region with the sweetness of apples, resulting in a delicious and distinctive treat. The combination of rich chocolate, tart apples, and a hint of cherry liqueur makes this cake a perfect choice for special occasions or as a delightful indulgence any time of the year.

    Ingredients:

    For the cake:

3 large apples (preferably tart varieties like Granny Smith)

    2 cups all-purpose flour

    1 cup granulated sugar

    1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

    1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

    1/2 teaspoon baking soda

    1/4 teaspoon salt

    1/2 cup vegetable oil

    1 cup buttermilk

    2 large eggs

    1 teaspoon vanilla extract

    For the filling and topping:

    1 cup heavy cream

    2 tablespoons powdered sugar

    1 teaspoon cherry liqueur

    Dark chocolate shavings for garnish

    Instructions:

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan.

Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples. Set aside.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract until well combined.

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined. Do not overmix.

Pour half of the batter into the prepared cake pan. Arrange half of the apple slices on top of the batter.

Pour the remaining batter over the apple slices and top with the remaining apple slices.

Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

While the cake is baking, prepare the whipped cream topping. In a chilled mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and cherry liqueur until stiff peaks form.

Once the cake has cooled, remove it from the pan and transfer it to a serving plate. Spread the whipped cream over the top of the cake.

Garnish with dark chocolate shavings, creating a beautiful contrast of flavors and textures.

Serve at room temperature and enjoy this unique twist on a classic German dessert!

Note: You can also add a teaspoon of instant coffee
