CHAPTER 1:
SMOOTHIES THAT NOURISH YOUR BRAIN
Our brain needs three things to function properly. They are; lots of sleep, proper nutrition, and sufficient exercise. Unfortunately, if you are one of the many people who follow the Western lifestyle, you are probably not getting enough of any of these. The good side is that the brain is very good at making due for short periods of time, but the brain cannot function optimally for a very long time without getting what it needs. The fact is that; lots of degenerative brain disorders are being linked to bad dietary choices. For most part of human history, the brain’s functions have been a mystery, but in recent times, scientists have begun understanding more clearly how the brain works. Like a car, the brain functions only as long as it is fed with the proper fuel. It needs specific nutrients to keep thoughts flowing well and for the memory to keep operating efficiently. If it is offered a lifetime of garbage, it can just wither up and stop working. Recent research refers to Alzheimer’s disease as type 3 diabetes.
To completely simplify how sugar leads to Alzheimer, let us consider how things work. The pancreas produces insulin, and this is what prompts the cells to absorb blood sugar, i.e. glucose, that your brain uses for fuel. When insulin sends signals to the cells too often, like when there is too much sugar in your blood, the cells start to ignore the insulin. Now, the person is insulin resistant, and the brain is not getting enough glucose to function properly. An individual begins to lose memory and cognitive skills, and then Alzheimer develops. This may be the low biology version, but the idea has been passed.
Some of the signs that the brain isn’t getting the nutrients it requires are:
