Who murdered Chalapathi and why he has been murdered is the story of the novel ‘Broken Window."

    Chapter - 1

Y ou just cannot know how much happy I am now. Janardan and Chalapathi were in Janardan’s house and Chalapathi said that with absolute happiness in his face.

That meeting was started between them both just one hour or so after their lunch, after the discussions between both family members about the marriage of Janardan’s daughter Susmitha and Chalapathi’s son Vijay, along with wine and snacks and they talked many a thing during the meeting of them both also and the time then was approximately ten or so in the night. Chalapathi said the same thing nearly ten times once the meeting between them both started.

I know fathers love their daughters but I don’t know they love this much! Just because your love on your daughter you not only agreed not to stand in the coming elections but to support me also. You are indeed great! this also Janaradan said many times.

How many times I have to tell you I am not doing that just for my daughter’s sake. We both are good friends for such a long time so I just want to do something for you also. Moreover you promised me to continue all the good deeds I have been doing till date. Janardan said.

Janardan and Chalapathi stood in the elections four years back, Chalapathi on behalf of the party in the ruling and Chalapathi on behalf of the opposition party but due to the good will Janardan got among the public he won in the elections. Even though Janardan and Chalapathi were good friends, Janardan’s winning like that created jealousy and envy in Chalapathi and he stopped talking with Janardan. Janardan and Chalapathi were living in the same village for a long time, even though Chalapathi could severe the friendship like that with Janardan, Janardan could not do so, he felt very much and always have been looking for an opportunity to resume the friendship again. In addition to this Chalapathi’s wife Sarala and Janardan’s wife Annapurna also were good friends and there was a relationship also between them both and because of the Chalapathi’s attitude they also could not talk and they also were waiting very much for the usual relationship between the both families.

As it was like that, as if to give an opportunity to them to restore their friendship, Janardan’s daughter Susmitha and Chalapathi’s son Vijay fell in love. Chalapathi put a condition to Janardan to agree to that marriage. That was; Janardan not only should not stand in the coming elections but support Chalapathi also. For the above mentioned reasons, Janardan agreed to that and both the families were assembled in the house of Janardan on that day to celebrate and discuss about the marriage between Vijay and Susmitha. Except Chalapathi’s daughter Saritha who was studying MBA in a college in the nearby town, wrote the final examinations and enjoying the time with her friends and Janardan’s son Anurag who wrote the final examination of M.Tech on that day everyone else of both the families were present.

Hundred percent I keep my promise. You need not doubt it. Chalapathi nodded his head, took his cell phone on the table there and looked into it.

You are seeing your cell phone many times. Is there anything important in it?

Nothing like that. I just casually am looking at it so. Chalapathi put that phone on the table and took the wine glass once again into his hands.

I am also as much happy as you are now. But I did not drink as much as you did. Janardan said.  Stop now, go into your room and take rest. There is a lot to you to do from tomorrow onwards to win in the incoming elections.

How do I forget about such a good thing? there was little slur in Chalapathi’s words while he was talking. Moreover you made such promise to make my lifetime dream come true

I keep all my promises I made to you and I never forget. You also have to..........

Need you tell me about it? while saying that Chalapathi tried to get up from the chair he sat but he slumped once again in it as he could not. Is it is not I who get most benefit by that? If the only daughter of a rich person like you becomes my daughter in law, who becomes more fortunate? In fact my son is so much lucky to get a beautiful and educated girl like Susmitha.

What all I want is my daughter to be happy all the time and I do anything for that. Janardan laughed. Forsaking MLA post for that is very little thing to me. Once you are going to become the father in law of my daughter, you become most important to me and, yes, I help you to become MLA in the next elections.

I just don’t know that a father loves his daughter this much! I don’t think if I have a daughter like you and in the same situation, I would not have forsaken such things as you did for her. There was appreciation in the face of Chalapathi.

If you are in a situation like me, you sure would do in the way I am doing. We don’t know but we like our children that much! I too don’t know that I do love and like my daughter this much until a situation came like this! But when she said to me that she is in love with your son Vijay, I was shocked yes, but I have forgotten about everything else and thought about her happiness only. But....... Janardan paused for a second before saying again as if to reiterate whatever he was going to say. .........your being my good friend also is the reason for my agreeing to it. We both are such good friends for a long time and I just want to do something to make my friend also happy.

You are absolutely right and I just cannot say how much happy I am to have a good friend like you. With a grateful expression in his face Janardan said. Anyhow I also shocked as you were when I came to know through my wife that Vijay is in love with your daughter and want to marry her and you also favourable to that. I just want to take the advantage of the situation and made the demand that you should not stand in the coming elections and support me in that. But I never have thought in my wildest imagination also that you do agree to it! Even we both were friends there were differences between us both families once you became the MLA and I failed in it. You are richer than I and can expend more money to become MLA in the coming elections. Moreover people have more trust in you than I also. If you stand in the elections it is almost a sure thing that you do become MLA. But forgetting all that, you agreed not only to forsake MLA post but to support me in the elections also!

I just want our people to live in happy and comfortable way by doing certain things. Whoever it may be do those things and make our people happy and comfortable, that does not make any difference. Don’t forget that you promised to do all those things once you become MLA. Even the main reasons are my daughter’s happiness and todo something for the happiness of my good friend, unless you agreed to continue all the good things I have been doing till date, I would not have agreed to your demands.

I certainly remember and keep my promise I say once again. Chalapathi said with firmness. Once we were good friends and then these politics made us enemies but our both little rascals made us friends again. I still can remember those days how my family used to come to this house and we both spend time together! How could I develop hate and rancour on you just because of your winning and my defeating in those elections!

I also want to become an MLA but never have felt any anger on you. My purpose behind to become an MLA is only to do good to people. To be frank with you, you did not appear to me orientated only to do good to the people so I have given good competition to you and became MLA in the last elections and yes, got the confidence and affection of the people a lot by doing all the good things they want I sure become MLA again. I don’t want to say the reasons again and again why I agreed to your demands.

Chalapathi put the wine glass on the table in between them again, took Janardan’s right hand into his both hands and squeezed it gently while looking straight into his face. I keep my promise hundred percent. I just do in the way you asked me to do and you never regret your decision. Believe me.

Alright, alright. I believe you hundred percent. Janardan laughed, came behind Chalapathi and put his both hands on his shoulders. Now go and take rest for this night. From tomorrow onwards we need to look into two important things! One, the campaign to make you an MLA and two, our children’ marriage. Then he tried to make him get up by holding his shoulders with both his hands.

You are absolutely right! getting off from the chair Chalapathi said. Anyhow where I have to take rest for this night?

In the same upstairs room in which you used to take rest in those days. Janardan said. I myself drop you in that room no problem.

While Janardan was making Chalapathi to walk towards the upstairs room, his servant Somaraju came across him.

Sir, I take Chalapathi into his room. In which room I have to drop him tell me? Taking Chalapathi into his hands from Janardan, Somaraju asked.

Left side first room on the upstairs. Handing him over to Somaraju, Janardan said. Once Somaraju started moving with Chalapathi, Janardan turned back and went into his room to sleep for that night.

IT SEEMS THAT YOU BOTH have talked a long time yesterday. Sowdamini, Janardan’s sister said. That is why uncle did not wake up yet and came downstairs.

Of course, yes. We started it at two or so in the afternoon and talked till ten thirty or so I think. He has become a little drunk than I and while I was taking him into the upstairs room,Somaraju came across and took him into it. I did not know at what time he fell asleep. Anyhow he was very much happy all the time. Janardan said.

It is the happiest thing not just to him to all of us also. Sarala, the wife of Chalapathi said. We both families used to be great friends at one time but because of you both competed for the MLA post, there has come animosity. But due to your great heart and thinking about your daughter so, you took such a decision and we all can be happy like this again. Once again I can talk and enjoy with my great friend Annapurna. Looking at Annapurna, Sarala said.

Whether there is any greatness of him or not in it, I am indeed feeling happy for the union like this between our families again. Anyhow..... with a smile on her lips Annapurna looked into the faces of Vijay and Susmitha there ..........these two made it possible. How they could dare to love each other even while differences were prevailing like that between us both families I don’t know but it really paved the way to the friendship of us again.

Mom, you really did not think that dad would agree to our marriage, did you? Susmitha knitted her brows together and looked into the face of her mother.

I did not. Annapurna said. In other situations I might have guessed it possible but I did not expect that he would agree even to the demand of Chalapathi uncle to withdraw from competing to the post of MLA also. I know that he has love and affection on you but I did not think that he has this much love on you. Looking into the face of her husband Janardan there, Annapurna said.

Uncle is really great! with an appreciative expression in his face Vijay said. He did such good things and got firm place in all the people’ hearts. If he stands, this time also he sure would become MLA. But forgetting about that, he agreed to the demand of my dad and our marriage has become possible like this.

You are making it very much! with a smile on his lips Janardan said. I thought it is just like a gift to my friend agreeing to his demand like that as my daughter is going to be the daughter in law to him. Moreover your dad is a great friend to me and I just wanted to do something for him also. What all I want is the same good things I did till now have to be continued in future also and Chalapathi promised that to me. I know Chalapathi sure do keep his promise and then what is the necessity to me to worry about anything?

I know Chalapathi uncle sure keeps his promise. You both were such good friends before your becoming MLA! Sowdamini with a smile said.

There was laughter with happiness for few seconds and then Sarala said.

In this happy union, as we are all happy like this, I venture to say something here.I hope none of you people do think otherwise.

You are always a well wisher to our family and whatever you say, you say that for our happiness. Annapurna sighed heavily and said. But I can guess what you are going to say just because I am also thinking like that. What we can do if she does not agree to it at all?

On hearing that Sowdamini’s face was filled with a grim expression and she hung her head.

You know that aunt does not like this topic at all.Why still you people try to make her distressed? Susmitha angrily said.

They are not talking wrong and they don’t intend to make me distressed also. Sowdamini said. It might be just three years or so I lived along with him but I loved him a lot. It is just impossible to me to think anyone else as my husband. I know I have become a burden.........

Please don’t talk like that. Annapurna interrupted her and said. "You never be a burden to us. Even you stay forever in
