    Chapter-2

    THE STORY STARTS HERE

To what a lovely environment we have come! This type of environment will be really much inducive to me to write something creative! I can say that I really do produce a good book this time. Pradeep exclaimed.

All your books are good and you are rewarded not just by good readership but with money also. Mallika laughed. But you must remember one thing! I would not be allowed to stay here for more than two years or so. So please don’t become too much fascinated to this place.

We have hoarded enough and we can live comfortably without your job also. Why don’t you resign to that job and stay at home? I just want to stay at one place rather than changing it for every two years or so because of your job transfers. Pradeep angrily said.

It was not the first time that Pradeep was making such a demand and as usual every time, Mallika sat beside him put her both hands around his neck and kissed on his right cheek before saying.

You please try to understand. If it is just for both of us, you are right. But our daughter Sukanya has to complete her medicine post-graduation also. Don’t we need lots and lots of money for that?

Mallika you know very well that we can do that also without your job as we have assets to sell. You can enjoy this peripatetic living but I am not. I am feeling very much uncomfortable to change places that often and once.......... When he looked into her face there was a sort of pleading expression. ..........we came to a beautiful place like this, it became even more.

I am also fascinated by this place and want to stay here forever. But...... she sighed heavily. .........I am more fascinated by my job and attached to it than anything else. You know very well under what circumstances, I have to get that job. Don’t forget while you were struggling to stand on your legs as a writer, it was my job which provided us with bread and butter.

I agree with that my darling. Suddenly Pradeep surrendered unlike in the previous occasions. I would not have become this much of a big writer, if you did not support our family with your job then. More than half credit should go to you for my reputation as a writer on this day.

It is not at all so dear, it is not at all so. Mallika hugged her husband and kissed on his both cheeks. Your writings are always innovative and creative! You write them so to attract the readers instantly that which got you the reputation like that. My contribution for your reputation is in fact nothing.

But...... Pradeep also put his both hands around Mallika while looking into her face affectionately. ............if you did not do that much of a thing in those days, taking a loan to self-publish my first novel...........

Pradeep tried to say something more but Mallika cut him off in the middle and said I just feel happy to play a part in making my husband a writer. I never think that I helped you but just helped ourselves.

It was not unusual that Pradeep mentioning Mallika’s help in getting his first novel published and in such times, sometimes Mallika would say like this and sometimes would get angry and ask him never to mention about that just because she was not thinking she did a great thing and helping him like that then was her duty as a wife.

Whenever that couple thought about their matrimonial life and how they started it together, both of them would feel amazement and thrill! Their marriage itself has taken place in quite an accidental way and both of them did not know even each other until their marriage was fixed.

Mallika was the eldest daughter in a family followed by two sisters and one brother. Her father was a small employee in a small private company and whatever income he was having were not enough even to look after the entire needs of that family. Mallika’s parents were always anxious how to settle their children in their lives with the meagre income that the head of the family was having.

While the matters were so, Mallika’s mother Sulochana went to a marriage along with Mallika and it was the marriage of Sulochana’s sister’s daughter. There the mother of Pradeep, Annapurna also has come along with him who were closely related to bridegroom. Mallika and her mother were introduced to the mother of Pradeep and she instantly liked Mallika and wanted to make her, her daughter in law. Mallika was nineteen years aged by that time, wrote her final year B.Sc. examinations. Even Sulochana was worrying how to settle her children in their lives, this sudden proposal was like a shock to her. Even though it was like a shock to her, that Pradeep’s mother coming forward to make her daughter his son’s wife without taking any dowry was like a boon! It was just like settling one of her daughters without much expenditure.

Mallika still could remember how she felt before the marriage. She did not even want to look at Pradeep as she did not like to marry at that time. The conversation between them has taken place only on the first night and a change in her towards Pradeep.

Pradeep just has B.Com graduation and the job he was doing was indeed small and there was every chance that he might lose that job at any time. His mother has an own house besides good and kind heart. Except that Pradeep’s family has no other properties. But one interesting thing what Mallika came to know was; Pradeep wrote stories. He got only few of them published that too in very unpopular magazines but the thing that he wrote stories indeed thrilled Mallika as she was a fiction lover.

Just in two months or so of time after their marriage what Pradeep feared most took place. He lost his job! With that small education along with little experience in a small company, Mallika understood, it was not easy to her husband to get a good job soon. It was never recognized in her family but Mallika was very intelligent and good in studies and she decided to take up a job to look after the family. Because of her preparation whole heartedly, she was selected in her first attempt itself for the post of a probationary officer in a nationalized bank!

That was indeed solved the financial problem of that family and Mallika started looking after her family also. Mallika encouraged Pradeep to write fiction rather than trying for a job with his small education and experience and in fact it was because of Mallika’s persuasion Pradeep put his whole heart on writing even most of his writings were returned. Pradeep wrote an interesting romantic thriller and that was also returned by almost all the publishers and magazines except one publisher. He agreed to publish Pradeep’s that novel and advertise the same if he came forward to finance that to some extent.

I know about the publisher and he is genuine. He published most of the reputed writers’ works and most of the unknown writers whose works he published became popular later. But I did not know he asks money like this to publish books. With a crestfallen face Pradeep said.

If that publisher is genuine, we pay the money to get your book published. He is promising us to pay royalty also on the sales of the book. Mallika said.

Three lakh rupees! Where from we can get that much of amount? And I am not sure that my book would become success after getting published.

I take a loan from my bank and we get your book published. I am sure it will certainly become success if it gets published. We have to do something like this to get you into limelight.

Three lakh rupees loan? I never do agree to that. Pradeep vehemently said.

But Mallika did not listen to him, took the loan from the bank and paid it to the publisher to get Pradeep’s book published. Later it has happened as Mallika assumed. That book has become big success and immediately took Pradeep into limelight. Later on Pradeep wrote so many books and most of them were successes and the bank loan was cleared from the royalty amount Pradeep received on his books. But Pradeep never could forget the big help Mallika did to make him a reputed writer.

What do you want to write now? It was indeed one month you have not started anything to write. I never know that you spent time this long idle without writing something. On the night of that day while both of them were taking their supper in their new rented home in that semi-town, Mallika said.

Till date I have written only romantic thrillers. Of course most of them were big successes but I just want to write something different this time. I am thinking very much and once I fixed on something, I discuss about that with you.

Even before writing a novel, Pradeep would discuss about that with Mallika and as she was good reader of fiction books, very enthusiastically would participate in those discussions and give him suggestions. Even though he would hear all the suggestions that Mallika would give, he wrote the story in the way he wanted and Mallika never complained that he did not follow her suggestions.

Though Mallika has no grouse over Pradeep writing his books in the way he wanted most of the times ignoring her suggestions, she has real worry about the way he wrote sexual incidents in his books. He always wrote them graphical and absolute without leaving anything to the readers’ imagination.

My god! You are writing in this way! This direct way of telling about private parts and sexual intercourse! It is not so in any novel I have read so far! in the beginning Mallika shocked on reading the sexual narrations in the books of Pradeep.

Sex is so common and natural to all the creatures not just to human beings. I am not saying anything that is not taking place. Why should I feel fear to write descriptively about something that is real and very important?

Just because it is real and important, you cannot say that openly about it. Even sex is that much important, can you participate in that in public?

I am not the only writer who writes like this. I cannot write anything if I don’t write that in the way I want. Without bothering with the arguments of Mallika, Pradeep continued the way of his writing like that and Mallika knew the excessive sexual content in his books also was one of the main reasons for the success of his books.

You are making such type of statements supporting regarding sex before marriage, extra marital affairs. Don’t forget that our daughter also can read those books. What do you do if she follows those suggestions? This was one other thing that Mallika could not support.

I am not supporting or discouraging anything. They are the views that the characters in my novel express and those characters views need not necessarily be the views of the writers also. Pradeep laughed and said.

Don’t try to escape so. If a writer does not feel supportive of such things, he cannot make his characters say like that. Mallika became angry.

Alright. I agree. Pradeep nodded his head and said. But you have to acknowledge the fact that our daughter is a mature individual and she can take her decisions using her discretion. She certainly can understand that her father also is one human being entitled to his own beliefs and opinions and they need not influence her. He paused for a moment before saying again. Anyhow even she is influenced by my writing and adopt the path suggested in them, I don’t feel too much. I did not give any wrong suggestions and whatever I have said regarding sex and extra marital affairs are basing on logic and reason. I just cannot write anything unless I right it heart-fully with my real feelings,

Mallika never won in argument with Pradeep but that did not create any breach between them both. Pradeep wrote his books in the way he wanted and even though that Mallika has above disagreements, she never objected to it. It was just usual that Mallika would share everything about her job and other issues with Pradeep and Pradeep discuss about the stories he was going to write with Mallika and take her suggestions on them.

You are appearing a little different on this day. In the morning of that day, while they both were sipping their coffee sitting side by side in the sofa in the hall, Mallika asked him while looking at him. What’s the matter?

At last I have come to an idea to write a book. Without looking at her, Pradeep said.

Congratulations! What it is going to be then? A romantic thrilelr again? Most of your books are so and all your romantic thrillers are big successes also.

No, I want to make it little different this time. Pradeep looked into Mallika’s voice. I told you already.

In which way? Are you going to write some non-fiction? Mallika knitted her brows together.

Pradeep so far has written fifty books but not even one of them was non-fiction.

No, of course. Pradeep laughed. It is something different.

Anyhow I can say in whatever way it may be different, it must be a suspense thriller. Mallika also laughed. I can understand that by the way you are keeping me in suspense.

It is going to be a paranormal thriller. Suddenly Pradeep’s face became serious. I am going to deal in it with black magic, shadow world, voodoo, etc. things.

But Pradeep......... Mallika’s face also has become serious. ........you don’t believe in such type of things at all.

There is no necessity that all our beliefs are to be true.

That means you are going to support those types of things and tell your readers they are in existence. Then it certainly will be a bad book. Already enough loss is happening in the world around because of the most people belief in them.

I cannot say any if you say like that. Pradeep’s face was still serious. Something deep in me is saying that I have to write a book on them and I am going to.

And I know very well that you cannot go against your instincts. Anyhow you are not the only writer who write such books. Mallika smiled. I wish you grand success in this effort also. Put best of your efforts and as usual I shall be with you to discuss whatever you want.

Can I do anything without that support from you? suddenly he put his both hands around her and kissed on her lips straight. It is you who gave the birth to this writer. Without your help, I am a non-entity on this day.

I just feel always happy that I could help you to get this reputation and stood yourself as a writer in the society. She reciprocated with his kiss by kissing on his both cheeks perfunctorily. But I did not give birth to the writer in you. You were a writer from a long time, probably from the time of your birth and I think you born as a writer.

It really surprised me a lot that you encouraged me to become full-time writer in those days. If anyone else in your place, it would not have happened like that.

It was impossible that anyone else was in my place, just because we have been destined to be man and wife. Mallika’s laugher was mellifluous. Anyhow if I were not a vivid reader of fiction and quite fond of that, I would not have agreed to that. When I came to know that you do write stories, I was just thrilled! I am a fan of many famous writer and the point I was the wife of a writer made me really happy.

But I was not famous by then. Except stories, not even a single book of mine were published.

That was why I want to make you famous by getting your book published. With god’s grace, it happened like that also.

    Alright. Alright. Pradeep laughed.

Now I have to go to my bank and you put yourself into your writing. If you want we both can have a discussion on this at night.

Certainly we should have. Pradeep said. I don’t get full clarity how to write that until I discuss that matter with you.

Okay then. Mallika nodded her head, got off from the sofa.

Just in half an hour or so after that, she left the home to go to her bank.

    &

Pradeep was indeed perplexed! Mallika was right. He never has any belief in paranormal and he never intended to write any book involving paranormal matters. He liked fiction, all his books were only of his absolute imagination and he just did not like writing anything basing on reality. He liked to imagine, revel himself in imagination and never liked facts and that was the reason why he never tried to write a non-fiction book.

Even though it was like that, Pradeep never wanted to write a book involving the matters of paranormal and supernatural. His readers knew as he never failed to say in all his books everything in them were just out of his imagination but writing things involving paranormal was different. Even he made a
