    K. RIES DEDICATION

This is for the woman whose brainchild this story actually was. She wanted to write, so we wrote. It’s been one hell of a journey and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I lurves ya to Hell and back. Through sick and sin.

To everyone who has ever read anything that I’ve put down on paper, thank you for reading my words.

To Demon one and Demon two. I love you to the moon and back again.

To Shawna, thanks for letting me steal your wife so we could talk about writing and the crazy conversations our Characters needed to have. Thank you for your support and encouragement through this whole process.

And lastly to my husband, I love you. Thank you for always taking care of me and the kids.

    KITKA BUCHANAN’S DEDICATION

Seriously Kat, this book would never have been written if you didn’t agree to my crazy idea and worship of a certain demon in rockstar clothing!  And I totally lurves ya for putting up with me!

To my beautiful wife, Shawna, and the kids, Erin and Alex.  I know that you all had to sacrifice some time and attention, especially at the end, while I wrote this.  Thank you for your support.  Love you all so very much!

Thank you to everyone who always told me that I could.  We all should hear that more often!

    Prologue - Then

Logan noticed the girl sitting alone across the rec yard and stopped for a minute to stare at her. She had dark hair and her eyes seemed sad, but darker than his shirt. She didn’t talk much during the coed group sessions they had. She’d been here a month already and she still sat alone. Usually when someone new came to the group home, they made friends quickly, everyone commiserating about the same things. Being an outcast, a misfit no one ever wanted. Or in Logan's case, someone they couldn’t control.

In the last year or so, he had finally learned to control his anger; but the state had long stopped trying to place him. It never worked out anyway, so what was the point.

Head’s up! He heard from behind him and turned just in time not to be hit with a baseball. He turned and glared at Danny, another no placement case and picked the baseball up and lobbed it back at him and the others that were playing baseball. Something Logan had very little interest in.

He walked across the yard, saying hey to those he knew, nodding at other kids he had no desire to talk to. He wanted to find out all about the girl, with her sad, dark eyes and midnight hair.

Skylar felt everyone’s eyes on her and she wished they would just stop looking. She didn’t want to make friends, something the stupid counselor kept hoping for. No, Skylar just wanted to be left alone until she was eighteen and could leave. Another three years and two months. That’s all Skylar was waiting for. She knew why everyone stared. She was new, the oddity. She didn’t talk much and strange things kept happening around her. Magic kept happening around Skylar, and Skylar didn’t want it to.  Her emotions were controlling it. Magic had killed her mother and made her sister crazy, maybe Natasha always was though.  She was sure if she told anyone what really happened the night her mother died, she’d be put wherever the hell Natasha was.

Hey, Skylar jumped and looked up at the voice. Then something weird happened. She felt her view come into a single focus and it was on the face currently looking down on her. That had never happened to her before. He was still talking to her, but Skylar couldn’t hear him. All she could do was stare. She closed her eyes and shook her head, trying to get whatever it was to stop. When she opened her eyes again, she let out a sigh of relief. She could hear and see again.

Sorry, what did you want? Skylar asked and flipped her notebook over when she saw he was trying to read it, upside down.

The kid smiled and Skylar tried to remember to blink and breathe. His eyes were mesmerizing, his smile magnetic. Skylar found herself wanting to smile back, but stopped herself.

I didn’t mean to scare you before. I wanted to introduce myself.

    Oh. Well Hi.

Logan Smiled again and held out a hand. I’m Logan.

Skylar held her breath and put her hand in his. She immediately yanked her hand back when she felt a small spark between them.

Logan frowned, but didn’t seem phased at all when Skylar folded her arms.

    I’m Sky,

Logan raised an eyebrow. Short for? He tried to pry.

Skylar huffed out a breath. She just wanted to be left alone. Don’t worry about it. What do you want?

Logan wasn’t phased by her attitude. He knew how being suddenly thrown into the group home could make you defensive. He just wanted to get to know why she was here. And wanted to get to know her.

It looked like you could use a friend.

Skylar pushed her hair that the wind had blown in her face out of it. I guess? Skylar wasn’t sure she needed one.  She had to admit, the kid was pretty cute and didn’t seem bothered by her attitude.

Logan laughed and Skylar found herself smiling. It felt weird and foreign to her, after a month of crying and screaming. Logan felt his stomach do a somersault when she smiled, and couldn’t wait until he could do it again.

Well do you want someone to talk to or would you rather scribble in your notebook? Logan tapped a finger on the notebook and Skylar took a great offense. She snatched the notebook away and stood up.

It’s not scribbling. I’m attempting to write a book, see you around. Skylar stomped away and Logan got up and ran after her.

Hey, hey, I’m sorry. Sky stop! Skylar stopped and turned around feeling all those eyes on her again. She wanted to crawl into a hole.

What! She hissed, just as a gust of wind came swooping across the yard. Skylar felt the color leak out of her cheeks. Logan stopped in front of Skylar and held up his hands.

Are you okay? I didn’t mean to offend you. It looks like you’re about to faint. Skylar felt that way too.

I’m...fine. I just have….issues with sudden weather changes. I’m sorry I got mad okay. I just...My writing is important. Logan stepped a little closer and closer and reached out a hand to Skylar, but she slunk away. Please don’t touch me. I don’t like to be touched.

Logan sighed. He’d seen it a thousand times. He wondered if it was her mother or father who abused her, or someone else all together. He dropped his hands and put them into his pockets.

Okay. I won’t touch you. But we still have an hour left before they call us for dinner. Do you want to sit down and talk about whatever you’re writing?

Skylar held her notebook close and glared. Why?

Like I said, it looked, still looks like you could use a friend. I just want to be your friend.

Skylar stood there and weighed her options. She knew the kids here could be nosy and only out for themselves; but she really could use someone other than the courts mandated therapist to talk to.

Fine, I’ll talk to you. But there are rules,

Logan raised his eyebrows. He had never heard this one before. Rules? He couldn’t deny he was intrigued. He nodded, rocking back on his heels. Okay, what are they? He stood and waited.

Skylar took a deep breath. She wasn’t expecting that. You can’t touch me for one. For another, no asking about my past. I don’t want to talk about it. Not to you, not to anyone.

    Logan nodded. Is that it?

Skylar shook her head. No laughing at my work in progress, if I decide to share it with you. I take it very seriously.

Logan gave her a crooked grin. Is that it?

Skylar shrugged. For now I guess.

Then deal, can we please go sit now, my legs are falling asleep.

Skylar smiled and shook her head. Somewhere, where people won’t stare, please.

Logan pointed over towards the building that housed five hundred kids. I have a secret spot I go when I want to be alone or when I’m feeling pissed off.

That sounds perfect. Are you sure you want to share?

Logan wasn’t sure why he said it, but he told her what exactly was on his brain. I’d share the world with you.

Skylar sighed and hoped like hell those defense classes they taught the girls would be useful. Lead the way then. And if you try anything, may the gods help you.

Logan chuckled and started walking, then turned around. I’m not like that.

I gave you advanced warnings, just to be clear.

    Fair enough.

From that day on, when you saw Logan, you saw Skylar. She was always there right by his side. Or under his arm. He was even her first real kiss. Skylar and Logan shared everything, except Skylar never told him what exactly happened to her family. And she never mentioned her sister. Maybe it was wrong to lie; but for the first time, she had felt normal.

Then Logan turned eighteen; and since he was no longer a ward of the state, he moved out of the group home. That was the day he bought Skylar a promise ring. She accepted it. A year later, she was living with him in a tiny efficiency in the middle of LA. Life was normal. And Skylar, Skylar was happy. Magic was no longer a part of her life. She published her first book when she turned twenty-one. There was only up for them to go.

    Chapter 1

Logan looked up from the newspaper he was reading as the girl slid into the booth.  She was only about seventeen.  A young, small town girl and scared to death.  She looked between both of the men and swallowed hard, waiting for one of them to speak.  Chase stared over the rim of his cup at her as he took one last sip of his coffee.  You’re Abigail?  The girl nodded silently.  So, your brother is missing.  Wouldn’t that be a better issue for the cops than us?

Abigail stared at the two men.  They were as different as night and day.  The older of the two was of average height and muscular with dark hair.  The other, tall and thin.  His skin was covered in tattoos and his hair was light blonde.  However, she stared into two sets of the most incredible blue eyes.  She shrugged and shook her head.  I don’t think so.  I’ve heard rumors about what you do. If they are true, I think you can help me.  Chase and Logan looked between each other for a moment.  After years of working together, they could practically read each other’s thoughts.  Either this girl was insane or she’d seen more than she should have seen.  If it were the latter, she was definitely going to need their help.

Logan nodded to the girl and flagged down the waitress.  Why don’t we get you something to eat and you can tell us your story?

As Abigail ate her cheeseburger and fries, she began to tell them her story.  My brother, Jon, went to Scotland with some friends on a ghost hunting expedition this past summer.  Something happened.  He would never tell me what, but he was never quite the same.  He was nervous all the time.  He was always looking over his shoulder.  Then, four days ago our house burned down.  I got out.  But…  Abigail began to fidget and shift in her seat, gnawing on her bottom lip.

Logan reached across the table and placed his hand over hers.  It’s okay, Abigail.  What did you see?

Abigail raised her head and met his cool blue eyes.  She walked right through the flames like they were nothing.  She did something to my brother.  His eyes were closed.  I called out to him, but he didn’t wake up.  She looked right at me and...and I heard her laugh.  The flames were getting so close to me, I had to get out.

Abigail lowered her eyes to the table, but Chase could see the tears streaming down her cheeks.  Abigail?  She looked up at him.

Can you imagine me telling the police that?  They’d lock me up.  But I know what I saw.

Chase nodded.  I need you to tell me what she looked like.

Chase sketched a picture as Abigail gave him a description of the woman.  The petite frame, the long red waves of hair, the white loose dress that hung just down to her thighs.  Once she was finished, she excused herself to the restroom.  Chase smirked down at the image before pushing it towards Logan.  It’s Natasha.  And if she’s around, Skylar's not far behind her.  What would they want with Abigail’s brother?

Logan thought about it for a moment and sighed.  We need to find out more about his trip.  Where in Scotland did he go?  Did they bring anything back?  Chase nodded in agreement.  And most importantly, we need to find him.

Chase tapped the picture.  Of the two, Natasha is slightly unhinged.  I wouldn’t leave anyone alone with her for too long.

Logan looked up when the girl came back to the table, looking back and forth between the two men. You’ll help me? She pleaded out of golden hazel eyes.

Logan looked at Chase, who gave a slight nod. He looked
