    CHAPTER ONE

    Maya’s family lived next door to me ever since Helen and I had bought the house ten years ago. I had still been married to my ex-wife then, and somehow, I had gotten to keep the house in the divorce. My ex hadn’t wanted it, and she had just let me pay her off for it. We had never had kids, so that made our divorce pretty easy. Yet, here I was, thirty-nine years old and suddenly single. I had been married for fifteen years. I didn’t even know how to be single anymore.

    Maya had just graduated from high school that summer. My ex had moved out in January, and the divorce was final in May. For some reason, Maya had always been close to my wife and me. She had been one of those kids who liked to hang out with adults, and her parents had gotten to know us, so they had never cared if she came over to our house to hang out.

    With my ex gone though, I thought this might have stopped, but Maya had kept coming over. It was a bit awkward suddenly having an eighteen-year-old girl in my house alone with me.

    Maya was an unusual girl. Her parents were both tall, and so she had inherited that as well. Her father was six-foot-six, while her mother was six-foot-two. At eighteen, Maya stood six-foot-four. I was only five-foot-seven, and very slim. Maya was
