    CHAPTER ONE

    The summer after my first year of college, my father was obsessed that I experience what a real job was like. To him, this meant backbreaking work that would make me appreciate the college that he was paying for. My dad had always worked in a factory, and he was both proud and resentful of his job. He didn’t have me work in a factory though, instead getting me a job at a lumberyard.

    I was worried about working there because I had always been small. My father was not a tall man, but he was stout and muscular. My mother barely stood five feet tall and was very petite in general. I had been blessed with a height of five-foot-five and always been skinny. When I met with Mr. Irving, the guy who ran the lumberyard, I thought he would take one look at me and decide I wasn’t cut out for the job, but unfortunately, he kept his favor to my father.

    What exactly will I be doing here? I asked.

    We’ll see what you‘re good at, Mr. Irving told me. We’ll put you with Riley.

    I wondered if I could come to work and be bad enough to get fired while not making it seem too obvious. I knew my dad would find something else awful for me to do if I did though. So, I was resigned to my fate for the summer.
