CHAPTER ONE

I met Amanda, of all places, at our weekly D&D game. Alex was the normal DM and he had set things up when we were freshmen. It continued on to our senior year of college. The group of people wasn’t always the same, but I had been there since the beginning, as well as Alex. Doug had joined our group some time in junior year, and now he was a senior like us. That was when he asked if his little sister could join in a game.

It was just a formality. There was no way that anybody was going to say no because everybody was welcome. Nobody thought anything of it, and so Amanda came to our game that week.

I don’t know what I was expecting from Doug’s sister. She was darkhaired, about five-foot-five and wore black-rimmed glasses that looked oversized on her face. When she arrived, she had her hair back in a ponytail, and she was wearing an oversized hoodie that obscured a lot of her upper body.

I thought she was cute immediately, but I wasn’t sure how Doug would react to my expressing interest in his sister. I was playing things cool then and just showed my interest in a casual way.

So, where do you go to school? I asked Amanda.

I’m a freshman at Ohio University, she said. We were all students at Ohio State. That was a little over an hour away from us.

What are you majoring in? I asked.

I’m not sure yet, she said
