THE TUTOR

I was failing my Japanese course and was afraid I was going to have to drop it. It was going to mess up my whole plan. I needed a foreign language to graduate, and I had waited until the second half of Junior year to take a language. If I dropped or flunked Japanese, my chance of graduating on time was in jeopardy.

I saw the ad on a bulletin board. Japanese tutor, thirty dollars an hour. Special motivation like no other. Call Naomi.

The price was a little steep, but I knew if I called my dad, he would give me the money if I told him what it was for. It was worth a try. I grabbed the number and called Naomi a few hours later.

What days would be good for you? Naomi asked.

Any days in the afternoon would be fine.

How about Wednesdays?.

Sure, I said. Hey, are you a native Japanese speaker?

Naomi giggled. My mother is Japanese. I grew up speaking both languages.
