I hadn’t known my grandmother at all, so it was a huge surprise when I found out she had left me her estate in Romania. I would have thought that it would have gone to my parents, but my father told me that he and his mother had some bad blood between them. She probably wanted to keep it in the family but not have it go to me, he said.

This made some sense, but I was going to have to go to Romania in order to claim my inheritance. I had been left quite a bit of money as well, so I decided to take a leave of absence from my job. I just thought I’d head to Romania, sell the place, take my money and come back home. It was at least a chance for me to see the place my parents had been born.
