There is somebody on campus who can show you around, my mom said. I had transferred to the state university from the community college.

Who? I asked.

Mindy Sturgill. Do you remember her?

I certainly did. Mindy had been the daughter of one of my mother’s co-workers and friends. Before her parents had moved away, Mindy and I had been playmates though to call us friends would be a stretch. I hadn’t seen her since we were twelve years old. The thing I remembered most about Mindy is she had been a big girl, both overweight and standing an astonishing six-foot-four at twelve years of age.

I do remember her, I said.

"I talked to her, and she says you should stop by the track when she’s done with practice.
