    What? I asked in surprise.

    You heard me.

    Look, you can just have it, I told her. We were at my little sister’s twenty-first birthday party, for which she had rented a cabin out in the woods, and we had both tried to get the last beer out of the fridge the afternoon before we were all going to leave.

    I wouldn’t be satisfied with that, Michelle said. I want to earn the beer. We both wanted it, now we need to compete for it fair and square.

    I looked at Michelle trying to size her up. Was she flirting with me? That seemed to be the case. When I had come here, me being twenty-two, just a little over a year older than my sister Laurie, I had been hoping to get the chance to hook up with my sister’s friend Rorie. That had been a no go, but I hadn’t given any serious thought to Michelle.
