    It was my wife who wanted to move upstate, after eleven years of marriage and life in the city. I reluctantly agreed because I wanted to keep Karen happy. She had been restless lately, and I worried about the healthiness of our marriage. I thought moving back to where she grew up would do the trick, but once she was back in the vicinity of her family and childhood friends it seemed like she could always find something else to do but spend time with me.

    I had first caught sight of Jenna when we were moving in. She was walking down the driveway of the house across the street. She was wearing an oversized hoodie, it was late February then, and she had the hood up so that I couldn’t see her face.
