    CHAPTER ONE

    Sheila was going to another corporate event where she was meant to stand around and play the dutiful wife to Max. It was part of the deal of being married to a slick corporate lawyer, but she had been tired of it within a year of their marriage, and now was entering year two. She knew that she should have listened to her friends, that she was simply too young to marry a man ten years her senior, and Max’s motivations probably weren’t the purest either.

    That was where it all started. She felt guilty about the way things developed with Aaron, but she never would have met him any other way. She thought that things with Max had been a mistake, but it was a mistake that would shape her early adult years. She learned who she was because she met Max.

    Sheila had been eighteen years old when she met Max, and he had been just blossoming in his legal career. She had been jogging in the park when Max approached her.

    I’m sorry, miss, Max had said. I don’t want to make you uncomfortable, but you are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.
