Jimmy spent a lot of time at the library. He was the first person in his family to go to college, and his father had drummed into his head how important his education was. You’re going to become an engineer, the old man said. That’s what I had wanted to be, and now you’re going to get the opportunity.

His father had many other things to tell him too. Don’t go chasing after girls, he said. That’s just going to get you into trouble. The girls will come after you make a success of yourself. Chasing after girls is just going to ruin your life.
