    EPILOGUE

    If We Shadows

    Prologue

The author's house stood on the edge of a dune overlooking Cape Cod Bay for forty years. Over time, the dune had eroded, shearing away in gentle showers of sand. The walls vibrated with the echoes of every conversation ever held in her rooms. She's never been able to assert her own will or even make herself known to them. Now, she's running out of time to tell them what she sees and wants to help them.

    Part  One

    Ruby Getting Married

    Sarah

Sarah Weinberg Danhauser's Shabbat dinner included roast chicken, stu ng with mushrooms and walnuts, fresh-baked challah, and a salad so expensive Sarah had guiltily shoved it into the recycling bin. On the other side of the table sat Ruby, Sarah's stepdaughter, and her boyfriend, Gabe. The two had been inseparable that pandemic year, all the way through their virtual graduation. Sarah felt an icy feeling in her chest tell her that she already knew. Can we be in the wedding? asked Dexter, We can be best men! said Miles,.

Gabe, I already asked Safta, said Ruby. Sarah and Eli met at the Manhattan Music School when Ruby was just eight years old. Eli was divorced, ten years her senior, with full custody of a child, employed as a periodontist. Sarah loved the way Eli pursued her with a single-minded intensity. He bought her clothes without asking for, or guessing at, her sizes.

He was self-assured, a little bossy, in a way that Sarah was surprised to nd thrilled her. Sarah had made allowances for Ruby's lack of a mother after Eli told her that Annette walked out before her thirteenth birthday. She learned not to inch when Ruby made a point of correcting anyone who got it wrong: Sarah's not my real mother. Maybe she could convince Ruby that there were practical reasons why this wouldn't work. When Sarah herself had gotten married, she and her mother had spent six months planning the big day.

Sarah had worried that the birth of Dexter would further alienate Ruby. Prickly, angry Ruby had loved the baby unreservedly. Dexter's arrival had been the event that nally turned them all into a family.
