    HAUNTED ANGEL

    Life Changing Journey

Looking intently out of the airplane window from her seat in First Class, Layla scarcely noticed as the puffy white cushions of cotton candy clouds whirled by. As a child, she loved spreading a blanket down on the soft pad of grass in her backyard to gaze up at the sky to try to find funny characters and animated figures in the billows. These clouds, however, had no affect on those happy memories and fun times. At this moment, they were not entertaining to look at; she thought to herself as she lowered the window shade and closed her eyes.

The comfortable giant Boeing Seven-Forty-Seven she’d boarded was headed toward the remote, distant, and seemingly isolated state of Alaska. Though she was headed to Anchorage, Layla’s thoughts were back in Iowa, reflecting on the home she’d left behind. With the beginning of January, a brand-new year, she was also entering a brand new phase in her life.

Despite the tearful farewell at the airport terminal as she hugged and kissed her parents and four brothers good-bye, this pleasant journey was taking Layla to more than just a new location; she was embarking on a whole new existence. This plane was not just taking her to a vacation destination and back home again; this trip was a one-way journey to a place she would soon call her new home. Her life was headed in a totally different path. Would she be able to adjust to all these new changes? Layla wondered and questioned herself. At thirty-two years old, shouldn’t she have roots firmly planted by now? Many people often changed jobs, relationships, and locations. She was doing the same thing - yet changing them all at once.

Her relationship with Emory was over. After almost three years, she realized she was only being used for his own personal convenience. He had no intention of having a lifelong committed relationship with her. It was still hard to believe even though she had come to terms with it. He seemed to love her so deeply in his actions and with his words. Yet, that was as far as he was willing to go, and he thought she should feel the same way. He’d stubbornly objected to the breakup, but Layla had been steadfast. She thought they were so much in love. Why did it have to end that way? She was not used to failing at anything. Yet, she couldn’t kid herself any longer about the truth. The answer was clear to Layla that this change in her life was now very necessary in more ways than one.

During this long flight; affording her time to reflect and think objectively, she realized that she owed it to herself to govern her own destiny. A rule she’d always followed, yet somehow temporarily lost sight of.

Peeking out of one eye, Layla noted that the seat next to her was temporarily unoccupied. Her very dear and closest friend, Annie, a friendly and harmless busybody, had wondered off to visit and make friends with the other passengers. With this last leg of the total thirteen-hour flight lasting five hours and forty minutes more, fidgety Annie would never be able to sit still for that long without going completely stir-crazy, and Layla would not be able to endure her jabbering for that amount of time either.

Annie bounced back and forth between checking on Layla and socializing. Layla was grateful that Annie was friendly and outgoing and got along well with everyone, because at this particular time, she just wanted to be alone. She didn’t want to hold a steady conversation with her friend. Her heart just wasn’t in it. Peaceful time to think and meditate was all she needed.

Friends since Junior High School, both the same age, Annie was a harmlessly playful radical girl, and Layla, the more level-headed conservative. They couldn’t be more complete opposites, Layla giggled to herself at the thought of it. Annie had transferred in from another school; from one of the neighboring villages in their hometown of Van Buren, yet no one would ever believe that she was the new student. On that first day, as Layla sat alone in the cafeteria, Annie bounced over to her and started a conversation as if she’d known her all her life. They had many classes together; studied together; and quickly became best friends. Her friend was a true jewel who kept her laughing all the time. Annie was barely five feet tall; a tiny little petite pixie with shoulder length auburn hair, big sparkling brown eyes, and a smile that lit up the room when she entered. She had the energy of a jitter-bug, and never stayed still. A Craft-and-Hobby Specialist by trade, she had become bored with life in small town Iowa. Her friend, Layla, she’d also decided, was at the same time, in need of a new life. She had a plan to help them both make a fresh new start. She’d come across an article in a world-wide circulated newspaper seeking serious companions for the working men of Alaska’s Pipeline. While not desperate for a man or foolishly hoping for an instant whirl-wind romance, Annie saw no harm with making new friends and acquaintances. This wouldn’t be the only reason to consider Alaska, but the article ironically opened up the possibility of a place where they would never ordinarily consider. At least they’d get to travel to a place they’d never been before, and shake off the old cobwebs in the process.

After countless debating sessions, she’d finally convinced Layla that life held more out there for them. They’d discussed that while they were not moving to Alaska specifically to join the ranks of the women looking for husbands, they would entertain the notion out of curiosity. And like in a game of chess, life was waiting on them to make the next move.

Unlike her tiny friend, by contrast, Layla was five feet, eight inches tall, mostly legs, and a body without an ounce of fat; evident from a religious, rigorous workout regimen. Stretching her long legs out on the footrest in front of her, Layla smiled to herself as she again surveyed the new outfit she was now wearing. She’d never owned anything like this before in her wardrobe, but thanks to insistent Annie, she did now. The black leather pants and jacket set fit her like a glove. She almost felt like the sleek and sexy vixen, CatWoman, from the Batman movie. The rich black hue of her outfit matched her warm olive exotic complexion, with features of jet black hair and dark-colored eyes. Secretly, she had to admit that the fabric did feel nice against her skin, and it was very comfortable. Gone was the long waist-length of her hair, replaced with a short nape, tapered cut. She now ran her fingers through it a few times trying to get used to this new style, and again wondered why she had let Annie talk her into all these outrageous changes. Was she going completely insane? It was simply ridiculous and totally out of her character! Never dreaming of ever wearing her hair short, she had to also admit that this new haircut was refreshing and easy to manage. She supposed it was high-time for her to treat herself to something new and exciting, and not so typical or predictable.

Layla would continue her current career and was satisfied with her decision to come to Alaska. Going along with Annie and this ridiculous notion of mail-order brides naturally peeked her curiosity. She’d only agreed to participate because she was interested as to why some women did this sort of thing. She certainly didn’t intend to be herded in like cattle during a selection process, Layla thought. Her career was not one of looking for a husband. No, she only wanted to see first-hand what goes on during the meeting procedure. Annie, she thought, though not promiscuous, would probably want every man she met. But as for herself, she’d let them all know right up front that she was not in the market for a mate.

Unlike Annie’s family, use to her zany antics, because she was always so level-headed, Layla’s family worried about this drastic and sudden change in her life. Yet, after many discussions, she assured them that this was a move she felt comfortable with. She told them that she was not made to relocate at gun-point and any time she felt things were not working out, she’d come back home and re-evaluate her status. She was traveling a world away to what seemed like a foreign country, yet living within the United States. Once she’d made up her mind to leave, she gave them plenty of notice and time to get used to the idea of her move.

When Annie first presented her with this notion, she listened; thought about it; weighed the pros and cons, did lots of research, and ultimately decided that Alaska was going to offer her a welcomed change and challenge. Based on her findings, the exciting differences of new things to see and do were all appealing. Never one to back away from an adventure, if she didn’t take the challenge now, she knew she never would. Yes, she was ready for this, and the opportunity arrived at the perfect time. Though this was a dramatic step, she was surprisingly eager, and no place on earth could ever get dull with Annie around.

As she readjusted her pillow and asked the stewardess for a blanket, she asked Annie to wake her about an hour before they arrived. She wanted desperately to try to sleep, because for the last few weeks as she prepared for the move, she hadn’t gotten any rest. She was really mentally and physically exhausted.

The plane arrived on time, and the women were greeted at the terminal by the organizers of the Welcoming Committee. After allowing them time to freshen up and store their luggage away in their temporary home-base quarters, the ladies were brought over to the main clubhouse for a reception of winding down and socializing. Until the women decided where they wanted to permanently live, temporary housing was provided.

The clubhouse was in walking distance from their shared apartment, so when she and Annie were ready, they headed over on their own. The mass abundance of snow was fluffy and clean, almost too pretty to step on or disturb. They’d seen snow in Iowa, but never this much all at one time. A pathway was cleared for them, but if they had to walk through it, it would reach to Layla’s knees and almost comically cover Annie’s entire body. Layla laughed at the thought of that sight.

The clubhouse was enormous; like a big warehouse, yet the façade was not cold, stiff, or unattractive. It was brightly lit in front with lights embedded in each of the four steps leading up to the two huge intricately wooden-carved entry doors. A wide inviting porch spread across the entire front of the building, perhaps for sitting and socializing outside during the summer months, Layla thought to herself. Though quiet on the outside, when the doors opened, loud music instantly poured out.

Standing at the entrance for a few minutes to get a feel for the place, Layla quickly made a mental and visual overview. One half of the place was designated for games such as pool, table tennis, and a few slot and poker machines. Another area was designed for fast-food dining, with small groups of tables and chairs. The rest of the space was for socializing, complete with intimate booths and softer lighting for mood effect. Though the entire place was large, it felt warm, comfortable, and hospitable with the help of many fireplaces positioned throughout. Statues and artwork of wilderness and nature scenes also served to give it a homey, inviting feel. All the seating at first glance seemed to be made of either soft cushions or leather. The most striking feature of all was the people. She’d seen a wide diversity of people the few times she traveled abroad, but never like this in the states. Here, every nationality was represented. The atmosphere immediately felt friendly and engaging. Though admittedly a bit nervous, the warmth of the people milling about instantly made her feel she had not made a mistake by moving here. It was hugely important that she felt comfortable, because people were her life.

Shaking herself from her inner reflections were the men as they now oohed and awed as a couple of women ahead of her entered the room. Silly males, she thought to herself. Yet, when she and Annie stepped further into the area, jaws dropped and the place became deadly silent.

Layla’s long legs and hourglass figure clad in the black leather pantsuit and three-inch black spiked high-heels made everyone stop in their tracks. All eyes were on her and she wanted to immediately flee, but was grabbed by the arm of her friend and ushered further into the room. Her short, shiny black hair was full and in place, and allowed her oval-shaped face to be seen unobstructed. Her flawless complexion and large eyes were stunning; her shiny red-colored lips were sensual and alluring. Like it or not, she had a look, style, and presence that caught everyone’s attention. Yet, she didn’t care for the interest, and quickly retrieved a seat in a corner of the room as fast as she could. She actually wished she could have disappeared through the floor at that very moment. After taking her seat, the room slowly resumed normalcy for which Layla was thankful.

During the course of the time socializing, several gentlemen came over, introduced themselves to her, and offered drinks. She was courteous, but not encouraging to their advances.

As always, Annie had no trouble mixing and mingling with everyone, and often left Layla alone at the table. When she finally decided to come back and check on her friend, it was with news of a hot prospect.

Layla, believe it or not, I’ve watched almost every man in this room come over to speak to you. Yet, there’s one guy who hasn’t, she marveled.

That’s the sign of an intelligent man, Layla joked. I’m sure he can tell that I’m not all that interested in anyone. He knows the drill on what happens at these events. He knows as well as I do that this is all very preposterous.

Don’t you even want to know which one he is? He’s absolutely gorgeous! Annie squealed.

Get a grip on yourself, girl. I didn’t need him before I got here and I don’t need him now, Layla said as she shook her head in amazement at Annie’s behavior.

A variety of music was continuously played, and so she wouldn’t look like a bump on a log, Layla danced a few fast and slow tunes with a couple of the guys. However, after more than an hour or so of drinks pouring freely, a few of the guys were becoming a little too rowdy. After many attempts, one of them, Big John - as he was called - a bully-type, would not relent until Layla graced him with a dance. Just to shut him up, she did. When the dance was over, however, he was not pleased that she tried to immediately depart his company. That was his first big mistake.

Big John, go away and dance with someone else, she began as tactfully as possible. I want it perfectly understood that I’m not a package, and you are not the prize. I didn’t come here with the intentions of latching on to a man or finding a husband, so I advise you to find someone else who might be interested. I’m just here to work, Layla tried to reason with him.

Laughter filled the room as the guys and gals overheard the lecture, and poked fun at Big John. He was not happy. Not only had this new woman turned him down for another dance, she was now trying to humiliate him also.

Seeking vengeance, his second mistake was pulling her by the arm and not releasing her when asked politely to do so. Layla gave him fair warning. Yet, when he only laughed and pulled her harder, the next sight his eyes focused on were the polished boards of the hardwood floor. One swift and precise kick had completely knocked him off his feet.

Before Big John could pick himself up, two men walked over to him. The commotion caught their attention causing them to investigate. They looked at the woman who had put him there, and then back at Big John. They shook their heads in astonishment.

Layla’s mouth opened to protest, but also because she had never seen a man so gorgeous. They were both very handsome guys, but one in particular was flawless - tall, dark, and striking. From the top of his head; full of wavy black hair; his muscle-bound body and confident stance; to the bottom of his square-toed western boots, Layla was in awe. His contrasting blue eyes looked at her intently.

Excuse me, ladies, he began with a deep, strong voice. My name’s Cooper, and this is Luke, he said pointing to his partner. We’ll handle him, Miss, he continued, now looking directly at Layla.

Layla didn’t think she could talk for gawking, and was surprised that she managed to speak. I’m capable of taking care of myself, so you needn’t worry about me. Your services aren’t required, she retorted, sounding a bit snobbish.

It’s not you I’m worried about, he replied. Abruptly, he turned away from her. Unceremoniously, he and Luke ushered Big John out of the hall. They took away his car keys, and got someone to drive him home.

Wow! Annie said once they’d returned to their seats. Did you see those two gorgeous hunks? Well, of course you did. How could you miss them? They’re giants! I think we’ve found our men, she teased.

Annie! Even though I will admit that they’re as big as Sequoia trees, a Gnome is a giant compared to you, Layla teased her petite friend. If she could guess, the guys seemed to be about six feet four in height, and about thirty-six or thirty-eight in age. Dammit, girl! We just got here! We’re supposed to take our time and make new friends; not grab on to the first guys we see. What’s wrong with you? she laughed coyly at her zany friend.

I’ve seen a lot of guys here tonight, and I didn’t click with any of them. The blonde Sequoia tree – Luke – is mine, and the other tree – Cooper – is yours, Annie explained as if her decision was final and not opened for discussion or debate.

Once Layla stopped herself from laughing, she spoke. But you two haven’t said one word to each other yet. How can you know? she asked in amazement.

I just know, that’s how, Annie said as she playfully stared off into space. Luke seemed like a gentle giant, she thought. She’d observed him during the night; he was quiet, and only spoke when absolutely necessary. He had sandy-blond hair and amber-colored eyes. He didn’t laugh or giggle much, yet he did smile a lot. He was handsome and muscular, and strolled throughout the room with stately confidence.

Annie, Cooper is gorgeous! Layla said shyly, and also a bit ashamed of herself for feeling this way. She’d been around Annie way too long, she laughed to herself. From her first observation of him, besides his dark good looks, he had a sexy grin, and a rugged, muscular, sexy body. When he introduced himself, he flashed a beautiful, bright sincere smile.

Pick that thing up from off the table! Annie teased her friend.

What are you talking about? Pick what up? Layla asked with a perplexed look on her face as she shook herself from day-dreaming about Cooper. Annie always kept her guessing.

Your lip, darling! Pick up your lip! It’s fallen to the table, she giggled. He’s the one I was telling you about earlier, but you wouldn’t pay any attention to me. I’m glad that incident happened with that stupid ox, Big John. You really knocked him out cold. Your lessons really paid off. At least something got those two good-looking hunks over here, Annie laughed.

Annie, you’re incorrigible! Give your hormones a rest, girlfriend, Layla teased.

"Honey, that man gets my hormones going!" Annie answered.

Getting back to Big John, why does this crap always happen to me, Annie? I was just minding my own business. Most of my outings end up this way. I think from now on I’ll just stay home. I don’t seem to do well around new people, Layla replied in a defeated manner.

You’ve brought all this on yourself. That’s exactly why I love hanging out with you and being your very best friend. There’s never a dull moment with you around, Annie told her.

I beg your pardon! And thanks for helping to boost my ego. Now tell me just how did I ask for this? she waited for an explanation.

When you and I first met back in high school and we were defining our lives, you said that you’d make sure when you entered a room, everyone was going to sit up and take notice. That you were going to command that room and everyone in it. Well, honey, you’ve perfected that craft down to a science. You’re so striking and confident, everyone can feel it immediately and their curiosity is automatically aroused. Those who aren’t afraid to approach you discover the wonderful person you are. Most men are intimidated, and the women envy you. I just love to see the faces on everyone when you enter a room. I’m always amazed at the reactions. It’s just so funny what you do to people, Annie laughed.

Using her favorite and constant expression, playfully Layla almost shouted. Stop it! You don’t see me laughing, Annie, and you’re way too melodramatic for me. If I’m not careful, I’m going to get a complex whenever I go anywhere. What’s wrong with people? Life’s got to be more interesting than sitting around gawking at me. Layla was baffled.

Like it or not, that’s precisely what happens. Isn’t there at least one man in here with balls enough to talk to you for more than just a second? Annie marveled.

Before the words were completely out of her mouth, the two giants again stood in front of her and Layla.

Excuse us, ladies. Again, my name is Cooper Dean, and this is Luke Holden, he said reintroducing his friend. We came over to see if you’re okay, and to apologize. This isn’t the way we treat women. Please don’t let this incident with Big John reflect on the rest of the men.

No harm done. My name’s Layla Jeffers, and this is my friend, Annie Haywood, she responded. Two handsome guys, she thought to herself. What luck, and what were the odds of that happening!? Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time this has happened to me. It’s not really a great start to my new life here, but I don’t expect the road to not have an occasional bump or two in it, she tried to reason.

We can honestly say that in all the time we’ve known Big John, he’s never done anything like this before. We can’t imagine what got into him, Cooper replied.

Ya say this sorta thing happens to ya a lot, Ma’am? Luke spoke with what seemed like a heavy, thick Texas accent. His handsome square face didn’t show a hint of compassion for her, yet he wasn’t purposely unkind either.

Layla could tell that Luke wasn’t impressed with her at all. He didn’t try to be friendly. Well, it doesn’t happen everyday, but it has happened, she tried to explain.

Luke said nothing else, but Cooper spoke up. That’s quite an affect you have on people, he said teasingly.

It’s almost scary, Layla replied. I think it’s best for me to leave. I don’t want to cause anymore disturbances tonight, she replied as she gathered her coat. I’ve had just a little too much welcoming for one night. You stay and have as much fun as is possible around here, she directed to Annie as she rolled her eyes with sarcasm.

Sure you won’t mind if I stick around here a little while longer? Annie asked.

No, silly. Not at all. I don’t need a babysitter. Stay as long as you want. Goodnight. Gentlemen, she acknowledged as she walked between the men. Layla bundled up for warmth against the frigid night and headed out of the door; back to their apartment.

After only a few steps away from the clubhouse, Layla thought she heard someone close behind her. She turned quickly to find herself staring at the chest of a man. As she allowed her eyes to follow up to his face, she recognized him as Cooper. What’s this about? Are you following me? she asked defensively because he’d startled her.

Sorry, but I didn’t mean to scare or alarm you. I only meant to walk you to your quarters. We’re escorting you ladies for the first night or so until you get used to your surroundings. It’s easy to get disoriented with all this white blinding snow and wind blowing so fiercely. It’s easier than you think to get lost, he explained.

Oh, I see. Well, thank you very much, she answered with caution.

I sure hope Big John didn’t give you an instant dislike for coming here. We don’t all act that way around women, he continued.

I’ve been around guys like him before. I’m used to it. I learned at an early age to protect myself, Layla replied.

Where did you learn to fight like that? Obviously you’ve had some training, he wondered.

"Well, I don’t look for or like to fight, but I’ve studied and learned a few tips of Karate’. I have four brothers and they used to knock me around pretty good. I had to do something to defend myself," she laughed.

I’ll bet they don’t try to toss you around anymore, he ended as they reached her building.

Though not as thick as Luke’s, Layla could tell that Cooper also had a hint of an accent. Perhaps he was from the Texas area, also. It’s probably just as much my fault as it was Big John’s, she admitted.

And just how do you figure that? he questioned.

Well, I’ve never worn an outfit like this in my entire life. I let Annie talk me into buying it. I’m not used to wearing anything this form-fitting. I usually just wear loose-fitting, baggy outfits. I’m more comfortable that way, she explained.

Big John’s poor behavior is definitely not your fault, so please stop trying to take the blame – even partially. You’re allowed to wear whatever you want without getting harassed for it, he replied.

And there I am – fighting! How lady-like is that!? It’s been a very long day. I wish I could start it all over again, she sighed. Well, thanks for walking with me. I can take it from here, Layla advised, hoping he wasn’t looking for an invitation inside.

Cooper realized that she was brushing him off. He laughed inwardly at her assumption of his interest in her. He decided to have a little fun with her by offering a tiny, little white lie. She deserved it, he said to himself, for acting so smug with him. Oh, you don’t have to worry about me making a hit on you. I’m already spoken for, he said matter-of-factly.

A little disappointed by this news, Layla camouflaged her feelings by showing outward relief. That’s comforting and assuring. One less guy I’ll have to arm wrestle, she came back at him with a smile.

Well, you have a goodnight, Miss.

Goodnight, was all Layla was able to say before he turned and was gone on his way.

When Annie returned from the Welcome party, she and Layla stayed up late and talked a while. I thought we were both lucky, but as it turns out, Cooper’s married, and Luke has a steady girlfriend. We have luck alright – all rotten! Annie gasped.

"Married!? Well, that’s Murphy’s Law, Annie. It was too good to be true. And it’s also a good thing, because after Emory, I need a break from men," Layla told her friend.

"Him being married works out well for you anyway, Miss, I’m not ready to get involved with anyone!" Annie teased.

    Social Event

"This time will be different, Layla, Annie tried to reason with her the next night. We’ve all been set up on blind dates. Of course, we don’t have to stay with the person if there’s no chemistry. It’s really an ice-breaker - pardon the pun," Annie giggled at the cute joke.

I really don’t like blind dates. It’s just so awkward. I’m going to pass. Tell me what yours was like when you get back. And honey, good luck, Layla said as she turned in her bed to continue reading her book.

You did not travel thousands of miles to read that book. Besides work, you also came here for some entertainment and excitement. You don’t have to marry the guy, you know. It’s just conversation - not a proposal, Annie badgered her.

"Most of the girls are here for proposals. I don’t like feeling like a slab of meat; no offense," Layla said.

I don’t either. I’m just having fun with them. Ease up and don’t take everything so seriously, said the light-hearted Annie.

You’re right, of course, but I still don’t want to go. Have fun. Layla tried to politely dismiss her best friend.

A short while after Annie was off to meet her date; there was an unexpected knock at the door. Thinking Annie had returned because she’d forgotten something, Layla jumped from her bed without donning her robe. Because the apartment was comfortably warm, she was clad in only a tank top and teddy panties. Running from her bedroom to the living room, she quickly opened the door. She was instantly sorry she had. As the door flung open, there stood Cooper. Layla started to stammer her words as she backed up to retrieve her robe.

Oh, please pardon me, but I didn’t mean to startle you, he said as he turned his head away from her and toward the outside. He wanted to give her a little privacy, but not before getting a quick look at her stunning body.

May I help you with something? Layla asked with mild irritation in her voice. You can turn around now, she continued and led him inside the apartment.

I came over to see why you aren’t joining us this evening, he inquired.

I didn’t realize this event was mandatory, she defended herself.

No, it’s not mandatory, but it is the reason you came all this way, isn’t it? he said sort of sarcastically.

You have no idea why I’m here. You assume I’m here for one of these men, but you’re wrong. Not that I really care what you think, Layla said sternly.

Amused at her frankness, he laughed internally. Then, yes, you sure had me fooled. That’s why most of the women come over here. What other possible reason could you have? This was not true, yet he said it purposely to irritate her further.

Almost knocked off her feet by his assumption, Layla had to sit down on the sofa to keep from falling. Certainly you won’t mind if I call you a male-chauvinist pig, would you? she said brazenly as her eyes widened with disbelief at his statement.

Without being invited to do so, also taking a seat, Cooper thought about his response for a moment. He was inwardly amused at her boldness, and awesomely aware of her beauty. Please don’t think of me that way. I was wrong to generalize you, he apologized as he smiled.

Boy, was he adorable! Layla thought to herself. She could tell that he had a charming smile and sunny disposition. He also had the sexiest grin she’d ever seen on a man. Are you on the committee to match-make? What does it matter that I’m not attending tonight? she questioned.

Well, I’m sort of an overseer with the guys. As a married man, I guess they figure I’m not as head-strung as the single guys. Anyway, to answer your question, we have a certain number of guys who would be matched with you ladies, and because you didn’t show up, one poor guy’s there without a date, he informed her.

Well, I feel badly for him, but the affair shouldn’t have been planned that way. There should’ve just been a general gathering, and then chemistry should take it from there. Did anyone bother to ask the women how they felt about this set-up? Let’s assume these women do have brains, she argued.

We’ve done it this way for years and no one’s ever complained before, he came back.

Boy, that scares the hell out of me if what you’re saying is true, she said sarcastically. Is that how you met your wife? she continued out of curiosity.

Amused at her candidness, he smiled. As a matter-of-fact, yes, it is. She’s a wonderful, smart, and intelligent woman, he defended.

There you go assuming again. I wasn’t trying to insult her, said Layla.

Maybe I did jump to conclusions. I’ve never noticed that about myself before you brought it to my attention. I’ll have to work on that. We’ll make a note that your name should be taken off the list of eligible young ladies. But just for tonight, would you please reconsider attending so this poor fellow can have a date? You won’t have to stay all night long, only for a little light conversation, I promise, Cooper asked earnestly.

It completely goes against my nature to play games with anyone, but I guess I can make an exception for one night. I must warn you though, please don’t include me in anymore of these drills. It’s not very becoming, and I’ll absolutely refuse to participate, regardless to whose feelings may get hurt. I can find my own way back to the clubhouse, she said as she rose to dismiss him and get dressed.

Cooper was left to excuse himself, but not before having another good inward laugh at this very sassy lady.

Half an hour later, Layla entered the clubhouse. Booths lined the walls, and small tables filled the middle of the social area. The lights were turned down low, and tonight only soft music played in the background. Before the men had a chance to gawk at her red slim-fitting, Asian-styled dress, and high-heeled pumps, making her even taller, she immediately spotted Annie and waved to acknowledge her. She tried to quickly sprint over to her friend when she noticed a sizeable figure coming towards her. The person was again - Cooper.

    Hi, Layla, he said.

Well, I’m here, she said, not replying to his welcome address. Where’s my mystery date so I can get this over with?

I’m sorry to have to be the one to tell you this, but your date got embarrassed when you didn’t show up and he left, he almost smirked, seemingly enjoying her discomfort.

Smart man, she replied, not wanting to give Cooper the satisfaction of thinking she was bothered by this. Good for him. Now I can go back to my rather interesting book. See you later, she said all in one motion; waved to Annie and turned to leave.

Wait! Cooper almost shouted out. Then his voice tapered down. Since you’re all dressed up with no place to go, stay a while and I’ll entertain you, he offered.

Shocked and appalled, Layla replied. Are you losing your mind!? Have you forgotten that you’re a married man? Marriage may mean nothing to you, but your wife might think differently! she barked at him.

For reasons she didn’t understand or care to, a few of the men in the room within earshot chuckled to themselves. They all probably thought, she said to herself, that the marriage rules didn’t apply here in Alaska. Free reign of so many women to so few men.

Please, just sit down a minute and allow me to explain. I’m not trying to disrespect you. I’m only trying to be cordial and friendly. I hope you didn’t think I was after anything more, he said trying to turn the guilt on her.

Layla wanted to slap him across his smug face for attempting to be so cleaver, but decided to toy with him for a little while. She was also hoping his wife would possibly come into the clubhouse and catch him red-handed. That would serve him right for acting so arrogantly. She sat down and waited for him to begin.

That’s better, he said. I don’t mean you any harm; I just thought perhaps we could talk a little while. Perhaps you have questions about Alaska you’d like answered, he began.

Not buying into his cordial act of changing the subject, she reopened it. Why don’t you just go home to your family? From what I can see, these are grown men. I don’t think they need a chaperon or any instructions from you. And furthermore, I told you when we met that I wasn’t here for the same reason these other women are, she continued.

Cooper couldn’t believe how strong-willed she was. She had something on her mind and dammit, she was going to get it said. Some equally strong man was going to someday be very fortunate to have her as a wife.

I know exactly why you’re here, he said calmly and matter-of-factly. I basically know everything that goes on around here. He waited for her reaction, and then continued. You’re a doctor, I understand; a Surgeon, and General Practitioner, he added.

Layla slanted her eyes at him in wonder. Was a background check done on me? What else do you know? she asked as she sat upright in her chair. She hadn’t filled out a profile sheet or questionnaire on herself. Perhaps Annie had.

A simple, small background check is done on everyone who comes here; not just you. And I only know the basics, nothing intimate or personal, I can assure you, he said with a smile on his face, indicating she might have something to hide.

That’s comforting to know. One’s personal life should be kept as just that. I’m only here to do a job - not to get involved with the marriage game, she thought she’d set him straight.

Are you committed to someone who would make it impossible for you to become involved with a prospect here? You may not have intended to meet someone, but around here, it’s always possible, he fished for information.

For your information, and the benefit of your friends so that no one else gets their feelings hurt or the wrong idea, yes, I am seeing someone. Therefore, I have no interest in anyone here, she lied.

Strange disappointment crossed Cooper’s face as he listened to the shared information about her life. Did he expect any different? She was a stunning, gorgeous, sharp, and intelligent woman. She’d have to be involved with someone by now. Either that or all the other men in the world were idiots.

And now that we have that established, I can go back to my book, and you can get back to your family. I’ll be seeing you around, Layla rose to leave.

More obvious disappointment stung Cooper, and Layla couldn’t figure out why, nor did she care at this moment. He was probably disappointed because he couldn’t match her with one of his buddies. She just wanted out of the clubhouse. This just wasn’t the scene for her.

I’ll walk you back over, if you don’t mind, Cooper offered. Just till you get the hang of the area and feel comfortable enough to maneuver around on your own.

Layla didn’t object, but walked swiftly; bid him goodnight and quickly closed the door.

Anxious to hear the details of the get-together, Layla sat in her nightclothes for conversation with her friend.

Hey, Layla! I saw you talking to that handsome Cooper. How’d that go?

Annie, don’t get excited. You already know he’s a married man, a chauvinist pig, and an arrogant bastard. Even if he was single, I wouldn’t want him, Layla fumed as she recounted their conversation.

I’ve got news for you, dear girl, Annie informed her with obvious delight.

What news? Don’t tell me you’re engaged to be married already? Layla teased, but would not have been surprised.

No, this isn’t about me, but about you. You had a date tonight with an eligible man, she said quite proud of her facts.

I know I did, but he left before I got there, Layla offered.

You don’t understand, do you? Dear girl, you were on your date tonight, Annie insisted.

Annie, how much did you have to drink? You’re losing it, honey. My date wasn’t there; he left when I didn’t show up, she tried to explain again.

I don’t drink much and you know it. You were on your date! Your date was Cooper! she said pleased with herself for telling her brainy friend something she hadn’t figured out before now. "Yes, Miss Dazed and Confused! That’s what I said – Cooper - your date – a single man. I’ve had it confirmed, and you know I won’t stop until I know the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth," she laughed, sounding like an attorney.

But how can that be? That’s not what he told me. He said he was a happily married man with three children. That my date left when I didn’t show up. Why would he lie to me?

I’ve found out from some of the guys and girls here that he tells that story to all the new women. He likes to check them out first before they go tearing after him, Annie laughed.

Why that lying, conceded, no-good, ohhh …! Layla screamed. An unconscious characteristic was to put her hand to her mouth and drum her fingers against her lips when something shocked, alarmed, saddened, or dismayed her. This she now did feverishly.

I thought that might rile you just a little, Annie smiled. "So you see, he was actually your date, and he’s actually available," Annie reflected.

Available or not, I don’t want him, Layla calmed down and settled back against the pillow. What else do you know about him? Her interest was peeked as she smiled sinfully.

"Are you sure you want to hear this stuff, Maid Layla? You know, he’s such a creep and all," Annie teased her friend. She knew her well enough to know that Layla wanted to learn more of the handsome hunk.

Just because I want to know more about him doesn’t mean I’m interested. He knows stuff about me, so I want to know something about him, that’s all. Pure and simple.

"Yeah, right! Pure and simple my foot! Well, Miss Smarty Pants, he’s lived here for ten years. He’s never been married, helps coordinate the singles activities, and hold on to your hat for this one," Annie said as she did a mock drum-roll on her thighs.

To play along with Annie’s game, Layla gripped the sheets for support because she didn’t know what to expect. When she did hear it, her eyes opened wide and she became as white as the sheets she was lying on.

Girlfriend, he’s a doctor, also, Annie whispered.

When the blood came back to her face, Layla was able to speak. Now she was really upset. He had been toying with her all along. Hum, a doctor. Now that’s very interesting. I wonder what kind? A gynecologist, no doubt!

"Wrong - he’s a Surgeon, just like you. And not only that, he’s Chief Surgeon in charge at your hospital," Annie educated her.

I’m not surprised, Layla replied as she raised her hands in the air. And to think, there’s only one hospital in this area, and I’m going to have to work with him. This is not looking good.

And just why not!? Don’t be so stubborn. You’re both available. And remember, he matched you with him on purpose.

I’m not flattered! Annie, I almost can’t stand the sight of him already. And now that I know he’s lied to me, it makes matters worse. I might have to leave here and relocated to somewhere else, she thought aloud, but was only teasing.

Leave!? Oh no, you’re not! I’m not leaving, and neither are you. There are just too many great possibilities here for either of us to leave. Did you forget that this is our brand-new start? You have to at least give it a chance," Annie pleaded.

Annie, I need time to absorb all this new information. I’ll sleep on it, okay?

Yes, Ma’am, you do just that. We’ve come too far to just turn around now, Annie replied, knowing full well that Layla was just talking. They were here to stay.

Reporting to Work at the Hospital

Layla wasn’t expected to report to the hospital for two weeks. Part of the agreement to relocate here was to give her a chance to familiarize herself with her surroundings before diving into work. Oftentimes, when a person came to Alaska, it wasn’t at all what they expected and they left before even having a chance to begin. They realized that it was only fair to give a newcomer a chance to decide; without feeling pressured to stay. You had to want to live in Alaska, and not be forced to.

She and Annie drove around the surrounding areas of their apartment and the hospital. Before leaving Iowa, they’d done research on where they were going to be living, so to now actually see the places they talked of was exciting and interesting. They knew they would not have a problem living here. This was like no place else on earth and was easily adaptable as far as they were concerned.

One afternoon they even sat out in the parking lot of the hospital so Layla could get an idea of how much activity took place at both the regular entrance and the emergency room. It was no more or less than she’d experienced at the other hospitals she’d worked.

Please tell me that’s not Cooper walking over this way, Layla said under her breath as she spotted the unmistakable figure coming toward them.

Okay, I won’t tell you – but it is, Annie laughed.

I don’t even believe it, Layla replied as she shook her head. How in the world did he spot us?

Before Annie could answer, Cooper had approached the driver’s side of Layla’s SUV.

Ladies, he acknowledged them. Is there something I can help you with?

After taking a few deep breaths, Layla spoke up. No, she said dryly.

Cooper waited for her to say more, yet when it was clear she was not going to, he continued. Okay, then I’m sorry if I disturbed you. I’ll see you all later, he ended.

They watched as he walked away, and then Annie lit into her friend. That was totally rude, Layla! How could you? Annie smiled.

Wiping the grin off her face after toying with Cooper, Layla answered. Annie, look at my face. This is me pretending that I care for two seconds. Layla then said, Awwww! Her face gave a sad expression for a few seconds, then a serious one – one second
