THE STORY SO FAR: Since losing the beloved parents she’d cared for, Ava has been living with her sister Sophie. While she tries to find work and get back on her feet, Sophie’s husband Simon has another agenda – to marry Ava off to one of his work cronies. On the eve of her wedding to Morris, a man she doesn’t love, she feels trapped into a future that’s the opposite of everything she ever dreamed of. Seeking comfort from memories, she flicks through a photo album of holidays spent at Hydrangeas, the cottage on the Cornish coast that’s been in her family for generations. Remembering how happy she had been there, Ava realises it’s the only place she wants to be. Just hours before her marriage ceremony, she tries to escape in the middle of the night. But when she trips, Simon wakes up – and he’s hell-bent on standing in her way.
Ava’s brother-in-law was standing in front of her car with his arms outstretched. ‘Where do you think you’re going?’ he fired. ‘You are marrying Morris tomorrow. That’s the deal we arranged!’
Ava could take no more. Winding down her window, she said, ‘No, Simon, it’s the deal you arranged. How dare you try to sell me off! I’m not some prize cow at the market!’
