THE CRISIS OF WELFARE STATE AND DEPLETION OF UTOPIAN ENERGIES

1.
From the end of the 18th century, in the West, a new awareness of the time is being formed: the present is conceived as a transition towards the new, towards a future that will be different.
The past is also taken into account: for the first time, history is considered as a unitary process that affects all of humanity.
However, Modernity will no longer be guided by the guidelines of the past, but instead tries to extract its own rules of action from itself.
The "spirit of the times" receives the contributions of two apparently contrary intellectual movements: historical and utopian thought.
Utopian thought proposes alternative social models to those that have existed historically.

The spirit of the times receives the contributions of two apparently contrary intellectual movements: historical and utopian thought.

Utopian thought proposes alternative social models to those that have existed historically.

Historical thought seems to oppose utopias.

An example of this is the political thought of the French Revolution, in which the hope of a fairer future is mixed with the counterweight of historical experiences.

Since the beginning of the 19th century, utopia has become an instrument of political struggle. Utopia was a genre that was used during the Renaissance: Thomas More, Campanella, Bacon were the most representative authors.

These novels never denied their fictional character.

Despite their criticism of the present, they had no relation to history.

This situation changes in the nineteenth century. A disciple of Rousseau writes a novel in which he poses a paradisiacal future.

In this way, utopia and history come together.

Although utopia was criticized by many authors (including Marx), it was considered a means to propose alternative ways of life.

At present, it seems that the utopian energies have been exhausted.

The horizon of the future has shrunk and the spirit of the times has changed.

The situation towards the end of the century seems to incline to pessimism:

    the arms race

    the impoverishment of underdeveloped countries

    growing social inequalities

     environmental pollution

    the increasingly sophisticated technologies

Intellectuals and politicians are perplexed by the new situation

    TWO.

The utopias of the Renaissance raised a happy life through the organization of society under certain principles.

    Nineteenth-century utopias are more realistic.

Nature and society will be dominated rationally, through science, technology and planning.

But it is this vision that in the present has been broken. Science is offered to us today in its
