    THE PLOT OF NEOLIBERALISM

CHAPTER 1 NEOLIBERALISM : A PROVISIONAL BALANCE SHEET

NEOLIBERALISM WAS BORN AFTER WORLD WAR II. IT WAS A REACTION AGAINST THE WELFARE STATE

ITS SOURCE TEXT IS Hayek's Road of Serfdom, written in 1944. Hayek's immediate target was the English Labor Party, on the eve of the 1945 election in England. Hayek's message was drastic: ... moderate English Social Democracy leads to the same disaster as German Nazism: to modern serfdom. Hayek summoned those who shared his ideological orientation to a meeting held in Switzerland, among those who attend Popper, Friedman among other prominent figures.

THEIR PURPOSE OF IT WAS TO COMBAT THE REIGNING KEYNESIANISM AND SOLIDARISM, AND TO PREPARE THE FOUNDATIONS OF ANOTHER KIND OF CAPITALISM, HARSH AND FREE OF RULES

HAYEK AND HIS COMPANIONS argued that the new egalitarianism destroyed the freedom of citizens and the vitality of competition, on which the prosperity of all depended.

With the post-war crisis in 1973, neoliberal ideas began to gain ground. The roots of the crisis, affirmed Hayek, were located in the excessive power of the unions, which had undermined the foundations of private accumulation with their vindictive pressures and their parasitic pension for the State to increase social spending.

In addition, fiscal reforms were essential to set economic agents on fire. This meant reductions in taxes on profits.

    THE NEOLIBERAL OFFENSIVE in power

In 1979, the opportunity arose for the realization of the neoliberal ideal. In England, the government of Margaret Thatcher was elected. And in 1980, Reagan becomes president of the US In 1982, Helmut Kohl defeated the social-liberal regime of Schmidt in West Germany. The 1980s saw the more or less uncontested triumph of neo-liberal ideology in almost all of North Western Europe.

WHAT DID THE NEOLIBERAL GOVERNMENTS OF THE PERIOD DO IN PRACTICE? Thatcher contracted money supply, raised interest rates, lowered taxes on high incomes, abolished controls on financial flows, created massive unemployment levels, crushed strikes and cut social services. She finally launched her into a broad program of privatizations,
