EUROPE AND THE PEOPLE WITHOUT HISTORY

CHAPTER 3 MODES OF PRODUCTION

Production and social work

MARX formulated his concept of MODE OF PRODUCTION based on two assumptions or axioms: 1) the human species is part of nature; 2) man forms a social species whose individual members are linked with each other in social relationships.
This species confronts nature and modifies it through production, and by changing nature he changes his own nature. Marx also emphasizes the sociability of humanity. Human beings live in organized communities and the way they are organized governs the way they confront and transform nature, and nature thus transformed in turn affects their social ties.

Through work, humanity adapts and transforms nature to its own use. Work is always social, because it is always an organized community that mobilizes and deploys it. Marx distinguished between work and labor. The work (WORK) represents the activity of individuals, isolated or in group; but work (LABOR) is a social process, carried out by individuals linked to each other within a society. The worker, the direct producer, is never an isolated Robinson Crusoe, but someone who is always in relationship with others, as relative, servant, slave, laborer.

Marx adopted the term PRODUCTION to designate this complex set of mutually dependent relationships between nature, labor, social labor, and social organization. Marx counterposed his concept of production to Hegel's concept of Geist (Spirit). For this philosopher, the various human transformations of nature represent successive concretizations of the Spirit or Mind; Marx, on the other hand, highlighted the activity of humanity organized socially: as an active way of changing nature and as a way of creating and recreating social bonds, through the transformation of the environment. For him, the term production expressed both the active participation in the transformation of nature, and the reproduction of social ties that accompanies it.

In addition, the Marxist concept of production emphasizes that the human species produces both with the hand and with the head. Unlike other animals, human beings conceptualize and plan the work process. Human work presupposes intentionality and therefore information and meaning. And information and meaning are always social.

    Modes Of Production

Amode of production occurs historically and is the way that human beings organize their production. Marx distinguished the following ways of deploying social work: an original, primitive and communitarian way, conceived according to Morgan's model of primitive communism; a slave mode of classical European antiquity; a
