WHAT DOES SOCIOLOGY WORK FOR?
CHAPTER 2 UTILITY: BETWEEN EXPERIMENTAL SOCIOLOGY AND SOCIOLOGY SOCIOLOGY
The author classifies his way of doing sociology by listing a series of properties (rational, empirical, experimental and social, critical, dispositional, etc.) that should be general to all sociology, whatever the style.
However, those who write on his behalf from the institutions do not always share these properties. This absence of general criteria hinders the advancement of conceptions and practices that cover the entire discipline, especially considering that it was sometimes used for "unscientific" causes.
The confusion that runs through sociologists (their way of doing Sociology as "THE" way), makes it even more difficult to define professional criteria. A social world that values the production of scientific truths requires Sociology the greatest rigor in order to be recognized.
ADMITTING THAT "GOOD" AND "BAD" WAYS OF DOING SOCIOLOGY COEXIST WITHIN DISCIPLINE IS THE BEST WAY TO LOSE COLLECTIVE LEGITIMACY AND SOCIAL UTILITY.

IN THE PRECEDING TABLE the author outlines a type of classification of the productions of sociologists. He starts from the premise that A SOCIOLOGY THAT SCIENTIFICALLY ADVANCES SHOULD NOT ACCEPT IN ITS BOSS PRODUCTIONS THAT DO NOT CONTAIN A RATIONAL AND ARGUMENTATIVE SPIRIT and those that are characterized by rhetorical or aesthetic strategies. The productions that contain a weak degree of empirical severity and methodological requirement should point to journalism or essayism. Within a scientifically sound situation, school-type productions should be the responsibility of producers
, that is to say researchers and not mere readers
of other people's productions.
The table does not mention sociological schools or theoretical paradigms. Part of the idea that ANY PARADIGM THAT WANTS TO BE SCIENTIFICALLY VALIDATED MUST RESPECT A HIGH DEGREE OF EMPIRICAL SEVERITY, METHODOLOGICAL DEMAND AND ARGUMENTATIVE PERSUASION.
