About this ebook
In recent decades, the philosophy of technology has become an increasingly important academic specialty. Nowadays, technology affects all aspects of human life. The influence of technology on the reality in which we live, on science and morality, explains the transcendence it has come to have in today's societies. To approach the subject, we have summarized the essentials of three of the chapters of TECHNOLOGY: A PHILOSOPHICAL APPROACH, by Miguel Ángel Quintanilla: CHAPTER 1 PHILOSOPHICAL PROBLEMS OF TECHNOLOGY, CHAPTER 2 CHARACTERIZATION OF TECHNOLOGY and CHAPTER 4 THE STRUCTURE OF TECHNICAL SYSTEMS.

PHILOSOPHY OF TECHNOLOGY
Since its beginnings in Greece, philosophy has reflected on technology. However, the philosophy of technology as an independent discipline is still in the process of formation.
THE WORD TECHNIQUE
COMES FROM THE GREEK TEKHNÉ
, AND MEANS A MEANS TO AN END. TECHNOLOGY ELABORATES INSTRUMENTS TO TRANSFORM REALITY AND IN THIS SENSE IS A SPECIFICALLY HUMAN ACTIVITY.
Philosophically, technique has been thought of as a way of doing, as a means and as a transformation. But it has also been thought of as revealing the way of being of a culture. For example, a warrior culture will possess a large number of weapons.
Some philosophers have thought of technique from this perspective of its relation to culture. Among them we can mention Husserl, Heidegger, the Frankfurt School and Habermas.
Others interpret technique in a more restricted sense, as applied science, giving it the characteristics of instrumentality and neutrality, without taking into account its social implications.
Basic research and technological research
The word technique
refers to a set of procedures to obtain an end. A distinction is usually made, according to the type of knowledge to which it responds, between:
- Technique: when the theoretical basis is common sense knowledge. For example, we can speak of the technique for digging a well.
- Technology: when the theoretical basis is scientific knowledge. For example, the technology to manufacture an audio device.
However, in everyday life both terms are often used interchangeably.
In addition, we can distinguish different STAGES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNOLOGY:
1. BASIC RESEARCH: this is original research that is carried out to achieve new knowledge, without pursuing any other purpose. In turn, it can be:
- PURE: when the scientist freely chooses the subject of the research. For example, if a social researcher independently studies the subject of unemployment.
- ORIENTED: when the institution that finances the research indicates a field of its interest. For example, if a government finances research on unemployment.
APPLIED RESEARCH: it is an original research to acquire new knowledge, but directed towards a practical end. For example, after the above research, the government may hire scientists to develop possible solutions to the problem of unemployment.
3. TECHNOLOGICAL OR EXPERIMENTAL DEVELOPMENT: is the use of scientific knowledge to produce new devices or
