About this ebook

Most of us spend the majority of our waking hours at work. As a result, work often has an outsized effect on our mental health. Combined with the pressures we feel in our home lives, it’s easy to succumb to chronic stress and burnout. Studies indicate that about half of Americans cite work as their number one stressor.
Brandy Payne, a former Associate Minister of Health for the Government of Alberta and Certified Psychological Health & Safety Advisor, understands the risks of burnout like few others. In Stress and Stressors, an audio course from Scribd Coach, she shares the wealth of knowledge she’s acquired during her career. In the course, Payne explains the distinction between stress and stressors, how to deal with stressors when they inevitably occur, how to manage your stress response, how to maintain adequate self-support, and more. She also shares exercises along the way to help you apply what you’ve learned right away.
Stress and Stressors is an essential listen for those looking for a fresh, evidence-based, expert perspective on stress and burnout.

    Introduction

Hello everyone! My name is Brandy Payne, and this is Stress and Stressors: Avoiding and Managing Stress and Burnout at Work, a course from Scribd Coach. Thank you for joining me.

Before we start, let me tell you a little about me and the work I do. I’m a workplace mental health consultant and former Associate Minister of Health for the government of Alberta. I’ve made it my business to help teams beat stress and burnout at work so they’re mentally healthy, happier, more resilient, and better able to do their jobs. I’m committed to giving team members the tools and skills they need to look after their well-being while identifying and addressing the underlying factors that harm mental health. What’s more, I know what it’s like to be stressed — I’ve been in high-performing, high-stress roles that didn’t support my well-being. I’ve even left these roles because I know first-hand how debilitating burnouts can be. I've also noticed that very few businesses know how to deal with burnout among employees. I don't want to see that happen anymore, that's why I'm so committed to my work.

I've got to say that I'm delighted to walk you through this course. After this journey, I'm positive that you'd understand how to not only manage stress but also avoid it and the attendant burnouts that come with it at work.

Now that we've got that out of the way, let's begin.

Where do you think you spend most of your time during the week? Or wait, that's a misleading question. Where do you think you spend most of your waking hours during the week? Yes, you may spend more time in total at home, but most of that time is spent sleeping. Most people spend most of their waking hours during the week at work. Some have 6-hour shifts, others have 8, and some even sign up for 12-hour shifts, which is half of the day.

Most people spend most of their waking hours during the week at work. What does this mean for our mental health?
