    Chapter 1: What Is Burnout?

    But what exactly is burnout? Yes, it's the feeling of being tired, achy, and stressed, as well as the inability to perform. And it stands to reason that we can't keep pushing ourselves without eventually collapsing.

    But why shouldn't they? Why can't you just keep going if you're getting enough food and sleep for energy?

    The primary issue is chronic stress. You will experience chronic stress if you work hard to stay productive. That isn't necessarily a bad thing in and of itself. Stress is simply motivation caused by your neurotransmitters. When you believe that something needs to be done and that it is worthy of your attention, your body responds in the same way that it would to a physical threat by flooding your brain and body with dopamine, norepinephrine, and adrenaline. This little concoction improves focus, memory, alertness, and other abilities.
