    Chapter 1 - What is the Detox Diet

    Detoxification is a process the body can go through in order to get rid of the various kinds of toxins that have accumulated inside it through the years of unhealthy eating and habits. This can be done through exercise, choosing healthier food and drinks, drinking water without impurities, and taking the right supplements the body needs.

    The major organs affected by detoxification include the liver, colon, kidneys, and the lymphatic system. Both the lungs and the skin are secondary organs in this process. All of these function simultaneously for the body to be rid of toxins and ultimately be healthy.

    Liver – Sorts out the toxins for removal through the bile.

    Colon – Nutrients are absorbed in the colon while the toxins pass through it to be eliminated.

    Kidneys – The blood is filtered through the kidneys at the same time collected waste combines with water. It is filtered through the kidneys and eventually comes out as urine.

    Lymphatic system – Carries the white blood cells (WBCs) that are responsible for immunity. It takes out wastes, other disease-causing bodies, and toxic substances to be rid of.

    Lungs – Carry oxygen towards the heart and remove toxins through the process of exhalation.

    Skin – Serves as an organ to remove toxins and wastes from inside the body.

    Kinds of Foods Allowed to Eat

    In order to make a meal plan that works, it is important that you know the types of food that will do you good. The rule of thumb is to indulge in fruits and vegetables. Get a load of fiber as such encourages bowel movement. Such foods include leafy greens and whole vegetables, gluten free grains and brown rice, lentils, beans, seeds, berries, whole fruits, coconut oil, green tea, apple cider vinegar, stevia, organic turkey and chicken and wild fish among others. Remember this when planning your meals.

    Kinds of Foods Not Allowed to Eat

    During detox alcohol is a big no-no. Fast foods, fatty foods and pre-packaged foods should also be avoided. You should also say goodbye to coffee, soda, pork, beef, wheat, gluten, soy, processed sugar, corn oil, whey protein and the like.

    Side Effects

    Mental and physiologic side effects could occur during the process of detoxification. These may occur due to certain changes in the way of living like going into exercise, diet modification, or changing a previous habit such as opting for plain black coffee instead of a cup with sugar and cream.

    Detoxification symptoms may manifest as fever, coughing, headache, colds, irritability, or feeling under the weather. These may occur briefly and cause only tolerable discomfort. However, sometimes they can last for a longer period and also cause moderate to severe irritation.
