Chapter 1 - The Detox Diet: An Overview
Detoxification diet, or popularly known as Detox Diet
, is a special dietary plan that involves the neutralization of toxins from the body. Toxins potentially cause damages in the body tissues, including waste products from regular cell activities like homocysteine, lactic acid and ammonia.
Although the word detox
is often perceived as a rapid treatment for drug and alcohol dependence, the said term also refers to various methods of eliminating dietary and environmental toxins in the body.
There are different types of detox diet recommended by experts. In general, the diet is done in a short-term basis but:
• Helps minimize the amount of food chemicals ingested by organic food consumption
• Gives emphasis on foods that have loads of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants the body needs for proper detoxification.
Studies show that majority of the chemicals we ingest everyday (through air, water and food) can be deposited into fat cells from the body. The toxins are seen in the presence of antibiotics, pesticides and unnecessary hormones brought by food packaging, additives, pollution and even cigarette smoke. Insufficient nutrients may impair our body’s natural ability to remove toxins, which further leads to the build-up of fat cells.

Detox Foods to Include in Your Diet
In order to build a meal plan that works, it is vital that you know the types of food that will do you good. The rule of thumb is to indulge in fruits and vegetables. Get a load of fiber as such encourages bowel movement. Such foods include leafy greens and whole vegetables, gluten free grains and brown rice, lentils, beans, nuts, berries, whole fruits, coconut oil, plant-based protein powder, apple cider vinegar, stevia, organic turkey and chicken and wild fish among others. Remember this when planning your meals.
Things You Must Avoid During Detox
On the other hand, dairy, eggs, wheat, meat, fish, alcohol, caffeine, sugar, salt, and other processed foods are not allowed. Actually, majority of the food groups most people have been fond of are restricted.
Side Effects
Mental and physiologic symptoms may occur during the process of detoxification. These may occur due to certain changes in the way of living like going into exercise, diet modification, or changing a previous habit such as opting for plain black coffee instead of a cup with sugar and cream.
Detoxification side effects could manifest as fever, tummy pain, headache, colds, rash, or feeling under the weather. These may occur briefly and cause only tolerable discomfort. However, sometimes they can last for a longer period and also cause moderate to severe irritation.
Detox diet isn’t necessary for everyone. According to research, our body can detoxify on its own with or without undergoing any diet.
